More One Direction Name Suggestions: Direction 2.0, It's Complicated
Following the lawsuit from a same-named band, your Twitter suggestions for a new name keep pouring in!

It could be weeks, or months, before we find out what will happen with the $1 million lawsuit against red-hot British boy band One Direction over their name.
An unsigned American group who claims to have had the same name for several years has filed the suit seeking an injunction, so on Wednesday we set up the hashtag #New1DName and asked you to offer your suggestions for a new 1D moniker.
In a statement obtained by MTV News, Simon Cowell's Syco Entertainment responded to the suit, indicating that 1D fans have nothing to worry about. "There is a dispute with a local group in California about the ownership of the One Direction name in the US.," read the statement. "One Direction's management tried to resolve the situation amicably when the matter first came to light, but the Californian group has now filed a lawsuit claiming they own the name. One Direction's lawyers now have no choice but to defend the lawsuit and the band's right to use their name."
And while plenty of you took the same stance as 1D's reps and said the band shouldn't and wouldn't budge, way more of you came up with some creative, silly and sometimes unprintable suggestions.

Acne is caused by the trapping of dirt and bacteria in the skin pores. Typically, this happens when the skin oil makes the bacteria stick. We encounter dust all the time, and are prone to every airborne particle. When our the glands under our skin, called the sebaceous glands, produce too much oil, the dirt and bacteria are more likely to stay on the skin. The continuous oil production coats the bacteria, which may get into the skin pores thereby causing acne.
Another underlying cause could be the hormonal imbalance. When your hormonal levels are on a tilt, the sebaceous glands work twice as fast and the same oil overproduction results. If you?ve noticed, when you get less sleep than you should for several days, you?re bound to get pimples. This is because your body supplies you with a steady amount of adrenalin so you don?t bag down due to lack of sleep. That being said, acne can simply be a result of another underlying condition such as stress, diabetes, and PCOS for women; with stress as the major factor in teenage acne.
It is futile to try remedying acne with products like washes and creams if the cause is hormonal imbalance. Why? Acne will simply keep coming back. Hormonal imbalance is usually the result of an unhealthy lifestyle. If you don?t relieve stress, for instance, then you will have abundant amounts of adrenalin at the expense of your body deteriorating. If you eat too much, especially sugary foods, then your insulin levels will rise. Adrenalin and insulin are hormones, and if your body produces too much of them, you should really consider changing your lifestyle.
This isn?t to say that anti-acne products don?t work. You still have the option to get whatever pharmaceutical products you want for your acne to go away. Most of these consist of creams and ointments, while washes, such as the benzoyl peroxide wash, are also available. If you cannot afford these products, or do not wish to spend a lot of money for them, then you can always just go home-based. You can find a lot of home remedies for acne; just look in your kitchen.
Lemon juice has acidic properties that can clean your skin. Peppermint leaves would do the trick as well. If you want the more ?gross? approach, rub some cooked oatmeal on your face ? seriously. For maintenance, simply wash your skin as often as possible so as to not let too much oil build up.

Shivya Nath: Diu May Be India's Last Beach Paradise
My slippers are in hand and my jeans are rolled up. I want to feel the white sand and the last remnants of Arabian Sea waves on my bare feet. I look at the turquoise waters in front of me and at the trail I've left on the beach. In a country of 1.1 billion people, you have to be really lucky to find a sun-kissed beach with not another soul in sight.
I arrived in Diu after a long, jerky bus ride from Ahmedabad this morning and immediately fell in love with the laid-back ambiance of the island. The empty roads beckoned me to rent a scooter and drive along the untouched coastline. With the wind in my hair, I maneuvered my way around the majestic churches of Diu, its sparsely populated villages, its eating joints and the remains of its old forts, the remains of Portugal's long-gone control.
Instead of returning in the evening to what is locally known as Sunset Point, a snippet of conversation with a resident of the island convinced me to head towards an edge of the island, where I was promised that there would be "no one." I found myself at the base of a cliff, on the right of which the sea and sand stretched for miles. No one was there.
The sun is now bright ball of fire it appears to be smiling at my arrival. On an impulse, I drop my slippers and run into the sea. The waves throw me a frisky welcome; I float atop the smaller, jump against the mighty, duck under the intimidating and find myself hurled to the sandy seabed despite my efforts. Each time I look up, the sun has moved a few inches lower and turned a few shades towards orange.
A dozen colorful little structures on the cliff scramble for my attention and, as the tide starts to rise, I wade my way to the shore to attempt to climb the rugged but gentle slopes of the cliff. The structures, I soon realize, are shrines that house the remnants of the Portuguese occupation. The waves crash sharply on the rocks at the edge of the cliff and the sun turns a bright red, the original color of these shrines. I keep them company until the sun makes its quiet exit.

Scots deploy taste testers to sample gas leak fish
LONDON (AP) ? Scotland has called in taste testers to sample the fish found near the site of Total's North Sea gas leak, an unusual gastronomic exercise intended to provide reassurance to Scottish seafood lovers.
The government says specially trained "sensory testers" at the Aberdeen, Scotland-based Marine Scotland Science organization sniffed and tasted seven different species of fish collected near Total's leak-stricken Elgin platform earlier this week.
Scottish Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead announced their verdict Wednesday in a statement on the government's website.
"They are untainted by hydrocarbons," he said.
Total's facility was evacuated late last month following the discovery of a gas leak. Since then the rig has been spewing millions of cubic feet (tens of thousands of cubic meters) of natural gas every day, and environmental groups have expressed concern over the leak's impact.
Government spokesman Tom Whittles said the taste testing aimed to provide "early feedback and reassurance."
"(It's an) established procedure which uses the power of the human tongue," he said.
Full chemical testing of fish collected from around the platform is still being carried out. Seawater and sediment samples are also being examined.
A description of the taste tests said the fish were cooked and then presented to specialized assessors, who take "an initial deep inhalation" followed by "one or two shallower sniffs."
They then taste the fish, before spitting it out into a cup.
The description notes that assessors also get water and "savory biscuits" to help them cleanse their palate.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Robin Ventura saw the Chicago White Sox score 10 runs and still didn't feel safe.

A.J. Pierzynski hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs to lead the White Sox over the Cleveland Indians 10-6 on Wednesday.
Chicago scored four runs in the first off Justin Masterson (0-1), but Cleveland closed to 5-4 in the fifth against John Danks (1-1) on Travis Hafner's two-run double.
Then in the sixth, Alejandro De Aza hit a two-run homer off Dan Wheeler and Pierzynski drove a pitch from Rafael Perez into the right-field seats for a 10-4 lead.
"I don't know if you ever feel comfortable with any big lead," said Ventura, five games into his first season as a manager at any level.
"I felt confident in our pitchers, bringing them in, but you can't have too many runs."
Pierzynski said the way the Indians kept coming back, he had the same feeling.
"It never seemed like we had enough," Pierzynski said.
The left-handed hitter wasn't in his comfort zone when he came to bat against Perez, having just two singles in his first 12 career at-bats against the lefty. Then his luck changed.
"He hung a slider," Pierzynski said. "I've been facing him for years and he always makes good pitches, a good slider, good slider, good slider. Finally, he missed with one and I made contact."
Following a 3-2 opening trip, the White Sox headed to Chicago after the game for their home opener against Detroit on Friday.
Hafner had a long solo homer and three RBIs and Shelley Duncan hit a two-run homer for Cleveland, which went 1-4 on its opening homestand. The Indians were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, dropping to 5 for 32 (.156) this season.
"Five games is not going to make me panic about my bullpen, my offense, defense or anything like that," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "We have to give it a little more time."
Danks gave up four runs, seven hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings. Masterson allowed five runs - three earned - and eight hits in five innings.
"I didn't help the cause by walking five," Danks said. "It was cold, tough conditions. Everything was in and out. My changeup was good and then it went away. I got the win, that's all that matters."
A year ago, Danks was 0-8 in his first 11 starts. He finished 8-12.
"At least I didn't have to wait until June to win," Danks said. "All the credit goes to the offense. I was very fortunate to get those runs, especially against Masterson. He's one of the best."
Paul Konerko had an RBI double in the first and Adam Dunn a run-scoring single. In an inning prolonged by third baseman Jack Hannahan's throwing error, Masterson threw a run-scoring wild pitch and Pierzynski hit a sacrifice fly.
"Masterson was a little inconsistent with his command, but he threw the ball well," Acta said. "We didn't play good defense behind him in the first inning. That really hurt us."
Asdrubal Cabrera reached in the bottom half when his routine pop to right-center fell safely among three fielders for a double, then scored on a wild pitch. Hafner hit a 433-foot solo homer into the right-field second deck in the fourth, his first home run of the season.
Konerko singled in a run in the fifth for a 5-2 lead after an error by first baseman Casey Kotchman.

Make sure that you include that you are continuing psychology education, because others knowing this will likely work in your favor.
As you work on continuing psychology education, do not let it be something you do alone. Speaking with peers about methods and new studies will increase your knowledge above and beyond what your classes will do. Talking about what you are learning will help imbed the information in your mind so that you will be able to better use it. Not only that, but exchanging information with peers may help you both to look at areas in ways perhaps you had not before.
All in all, continuing psychology education will be a great benefit to you as well as your patients. If you do not already have an institution with whom you work to continue your training then you should find one soon that offers approved classes as well as peer fellowship opportunities. Do not forget to use the fact that you are continually being educated to your advantage as you promote your clinic.

The Foreign currency exchange (FOREX) market is a cash (or ?spot?) market for currency. Unlike the stock exchange, the FOREX market is not located on a trading floor or centralized on an exchange. Instead, it is entirely electronic within a network of banks and runs 24 hours per day Sunday evening (5:00 pm EST) through Friday evening (4:00 pm EST), excluding some holidays. The fact that it is all electronic means that you can tap into it from your computer.
How is it traded?
FOREX is traded in currency pairs, for example EUR/USD is the Euro base currency and the US dollar counter (or quote) currency. There are six major pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD (Great Britian pound vs. US dollar), USD/JPY (US dollar vs. Japanese yen), USD/CAD (US dollar vs. Canadian dollar), AUD/USD (Australian dollar vs. US dollar), and USD/CHF (US dollar vs. Swiss Franc).
Currencies are traded in dollar amounts called lots. For a ?standard? account, one lot (called a standard lot) is $1,000 and controls $100,000 in currency. For example, when you place an order to buy one lot of EUR/USD, you are buying the EUR and simultaneously selling the USD. The margin you must put up to place the order is $1000 (for a standard lot). You are going long the EUR and expecting it to strengthen against the USD. For every increase of $0.0001 in the EUR, you make one ?pip? (price interest point) equivalent to $10 per lot traded.
Similarly, for a ?mini-account? when you place an order to sell one mini-lot (one-tenth of a standard lot) of EUR/USD, you are selling the EUR and simultaneously buying the USD. You are going short the EUR and expecting it to weaken against the USD. The margin requirement is $100.00 per mini-lot. For every decrease in the EUR of $0.0001 you make one pip equivalent to $1 per mini-lot traded.
Note that unlike trading stocks, there are absolutely no restrictions on short-selling in FOREX. Short-selling is exactly like buying ? except that you?re selling of course.
The pip value and amount per pip per lot differs when the USD is not the counter or quote currency. For example, when buying the USD/JPY pair with a ask price of 109.00 (meaning 1 USD equals 109.00 yen), a change in the Japanese yen of 0.01 yen is equivalent to 1 pip or $9.17 per pip per lot traded ($9.17 = $100,000 x 0.01 / 109.00).
The broker makes money off the spread which is the difference in the quotation ask and bid prices. You buy the base currency at the ask price and sell it at the bid price. Generally, the major currency pairs have relatively low spreads. The EUR/USD is commonly two to three pips and the GPD/USD is commonly four to five pips. For example, the current bid/ask price for EUR/USD is quoted at 1.2322/1.2324. This means that you can buy 1 EUR (the base currency) for $1.2324 USD (the counter-currency). You buy at the ask price. You can sell 1 EUR for $1.2322 USD (you sell at the bid price). You will pay the broker the spread or $1.2324 ? $1.2322 = $0.0002 = 2 pips. For a standard lot, the broker fee (in this example) is $10 x 2 pips = $20 per standard lot for a roundtrip trade (1 buy and matching sell or 1 sell and matching buy). For a mini-lot, the fee would be $1 x 2 pips = $2 per mini-lot for a roundtrip trade. The broker fee is automatically deducted from your account.
Obviously, if you buy (go long) a currency pair, you expect the base currency to increase in price. Your objective is to sell later at a price higher than you purchased and make a profit. On the flip side, if you sell (go short) a currency pair, you expect the base currency to decrease in price. Your objective is to buy later at a price that is lower than the price you originally sold, and thus make a profit off the difference.
There?s more to it than can be explained in this overview, but you should get the basic idea.
What are the benefits?
1. With FOREX trading, there is no inventory, no employees, and no customers. Your overhead can be as minimal as a home computer with internet access.
2. You can get started with a ?mini-account? investing as little as $300.
3. Currency prices tend to repeat in relatively predictable cycles creating strong trends. Once you learn how to trade properly, you can compound your money, and potentially turn a little into a lot.
4. You can trade for a few hours per week, or much more if you want to. It?s all up to you.
5. The FOREX market is very liquid, with trillions of dollars traded every day. On its slowest day, orders can usually be placed within a few seconds if you stay with the major currencies. Instantaneous execution (1 to 2 seconds) is the norm during normal trade volume days (for the major currencies).
6. You can trade from just about anywhere as long as you have a computer with internet access to your account.
What are the risks?
1. The market can be very volatile, especially during times of major news releases, also known as ?fundamental announcements.? The time of these announcements is usually known in advance. Many traders simply stay out of the market during these announcements and wait until market volatility has settled back down.
2. If you use too much margin or risk too much on any one trade, your account could suffer badly on a trade that doesn?t go your way. Proper risk management, including sound placement of stops and not risking more than 2 percent of your account on any one trade, can alleviate this risk. Do not risk more money than you can afford to lose.
3. A major world event could trigger a huge volatility swing that could wipe out your account (or even more). However, some brokers limit the loss to the amount in your account. (Of course, a major world event could also cause the trade to go your way.)
4. Trader psychology (fear and greed) can play a big role in your success or failure as a trader. Trading education is one of the keys to overcoming these human flaws.
5. You could fail to place a stop loss with your order. A change in price could force a liquidation of your trade if your account falls below the required margin maintenance. To alleviate this risk, always set a stop loss when you place an order.

How can I get started?
You can easily open an online account by selecting one from many available FOREX brokers. You can, and should open a demo account to practice (and learn) for several months for free. The practice account makes simulated trades using real-time data. This is called ?paper trading.? FOX Sports Saturday Night Recreation Domination | Media Rantz

FOX is betting that live sports programming, including baseball, college football and NASCAR, will be more arresting television for viewers than longtime Saturday night staple "COPS." The question is whether there will be enough viewers around on Saturday nights to warrant this programming strategy.
FOX has Saturday night fever. Their prescription: sports, sports and even more sports.
The network is beefing up most of their foreseeable Saturday nights with programming from their sports division, hoping to attract viewers on a night that in recent years has seen viewing patterns subside.
FOX?s Saturday night programming is buoyed by nine Major League Baseball games including a pivotal game in this year?s World Series, and thirteen college football games including the Big Ten Championship game on the first day of December. There will also be three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races ?under the lights? over the next five weeks, and a few Ultimate Fighting Championship events scattered throughout the year.
The last time a sporting event was expected to receive huge ratings was in early January, when the Denver Broncos, off an improbable and impressive Wild Card win led by quarterback Tim Tebow (who, in case you have been living under a rock, now dons a different uniform), were facing off against the New England Patriots. The end result was a 20.6% overnight rating on CBS, which was actually outdone by the Saints/49ers playoff game that aired on FOX prior to the Broncos/Patriots contest. At around that time, I explained how Saturday night, which over the years had enjoyed traditional high viewership with shows such as ?Fantasy Island? and ?Diff?rent Strokes,? had become a vast wasteland in which networks ? including FOX itself ? had programmed reruns of shows that air on other nights of the week, or low-rated programs nearing cancellation or hiatus.
But Eric Shanks, the co-president and COO of FOX Sports Media Group, sees otherwise.
?We see Saturday nights as the perfect home for quality sports programming,? he said in a press release. ?We?ve put together a solid schedule that gives us a consistent Saturday night franchise for the first time ever.?
Previously, FOX?s de facto Saturday night franchise for most of the previous two decades consisted of ?COPS,? which is approacing its 25th anniversary, and ?America?s Most Wanted,? which reached its 1,000th episode not too long ago, but since last year, has been effectively canceled, downgraded to quarterly specials on the network, with additional regularly scheduled episodes airing weekly on the Lifetime cable network. Indeed, part of the reason FOX removed the iconic crime-fighting series hosted by John Walsh from their lineup as a weekly show was because it was not financially viable, and ?we need a space to air repeats.?
But FOX?s commitment to sports programming on Saturday nights ? including a stretch of fifteen consecutive weeks starting September 1 ? means ?COPS? will be off duty for a large portion of their milestone season.
After the NASCAR event at Darlington on May 12 will be eight straight weeks of FOX?s ?Baseball Night In America? franchise ? which isn?t necessarily a new idea, by the way ? culminating on July 7, the final Saturday before this year?s All-Star break. There will then be a seven-week sports sabbatical with the exception of a UFC event right in the middle of this period on August 4.
I should point out that there is somewhat of a misleading inaccuracy in FOX?s press release. At the beginning, it reads, ?utilizing an enviable combination of college football, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, NFL and UFC events, FOX Sports has a big-time sports event scheduled on 28 of 32 Saturday nights from April 14 through December 8.? However, if you look at the rundown of Saturday night sporting events on FOX in 2012, not a single one listed is an NFL event. Meanwhile, FOX is scheduled to carry three NFL preseason games in August, but not on Saturdays. (Not that NFL exhibition games are ?big-time sports events? to begin with.) And incidentally, the aforementioned Saints/49ers divisional playoff game ? which did air on a Saturday, though in the?late afternoon on the East Coast?- was not mentioned in the entire press release, which does recall previous sports broadcasts on FOX in 2012, including the NFC Championship Game. Go figure. (Also, the text refers to ?Game 4 of the World Series,? which actually is scheduled for October 28, which is a Sunday; Game 3 of the Series is set for Saturday, October 27.)
And the timing of this plan is interesting: note that it was days ago that FOX announced plans for a new general sports cable network to rival ESPN. Keep in mind that the channel that is projected to be converted into this proposed network, Fuel, already carries UFC events. Is it possible that the new FOX sports network could assume some or all of these sports programs based on the ratings FOX gets for them in 2012?
You can tell FOX is pumped up for sports on Saturday nights when they channel Elton John at the very beginning of their press release: ?As the song goes, Saturday night?s alright for fightin?? and kickin?? and racin?? and pitchin?? and hittin?. Sorry, Elton.?
With FOX virtually abandoning a longtime Saturday night cornerstone for a new one, in an era where Saturday night is, according to ratings, not alright for watching television, when all is said and done at the end of this experiment, will FOX ? to borrow another title from the Elton John song catalog ? still be standing?

The asexual movement is growing, and whether it?s because people are rejecting our society?s obsession with sexuality or because they are truly just not that into it, ?tens of thousands? of men and women are perfectly fine living a life without sex.
Self-proclaimed asexual, David Jay, says his life has never revolved around sex. Not even in high school when most boys? hormones are raging out of control. That?s because, like approximately 1% of the population, Jay identifies as asexual. And there?s nothing wrong with that, he says. So much so that he?s now America?s best known asexual spokesperson, appearing on everything from The View to MTV, and even starting an online community which now reportedly attracts tens of thousands of other asexual people.
The Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) is a site dedicated to raising awareness of asexuality and giving a sense of belonging to others who have felt alienated from the sexual focus that dominates our culture today.
Asexual people are not the same as celibate people. Basically, asexuality is the absence of sexual attraction?it?s not necessarily a choice like celibacy is. Some asexual people are married or in a relationship, some aren?t. Some are even sexually active just to please their partners, but admit they have no interest in sex. Some think sex is disgusting, some are indifferent, and some have never even kissed another person.
But it?s not because they are cold, unsociable people without a desire to have any relationships. They just don?t have a desire for a sexual relationship?like Jay (and thousands of others), even though he says for years he just assumed he was ?broken?. But now he realizes it?s just who he is.
He also realizes that sex today has gotten so far away from what it should be:
It?s not that we talk about sex too much. It?s that we celebrate sex in a way that is inauthentic. If we were to have a widespread, accurate discussion of sexuality ? all the things that it means and doesn?t mean to people ? that would include a discussion of the fact that sex is not interesting to everyone at some points, and that?s okay, and sex is not interesting to some people all the time, and that?s okay. Instead, I think what we have is a dialogue that fetishizes and celebrates sexuality, and equates it with the sum of our value and relationships.
Mark Carrigan, a researcher at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom told the Atlantic that sexuality is different for every person?even if that means a lack of it. He calls it ?the sexual assumption??a notion that is embedded in our society ?the idea that everyone has sexual attraction, that it?s this powerful force inside of you, and that it is experienced the same way by every person.?
But not everyone agrees that a life without sex is normal. On a blog by sex columnist Dan Savage, one commenter wrote:
People who are ?asexual? are not the norm. Being not the norm most likely means there is something either mentally or physically wrong. Guilt, shame, hormones and physical deformity probably play major roles. Why else would somebody forego one of life?s most pleasent experiences? There is nothing wrong with sex.

Drought, cholera kill 10,000 birds at vital refuge
TULELAKE, Calif.?? Dave Mauser walked the edge of a mudflat, peering underneath the dried brown rushes where one coot after another had gone to hide and then die.
"Now the coots are getting the worst of it," said Mauser, head biologist on the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, the nation's first large marshland preserved for waterfowl habitat. "Prior to that it was the snow geese and the white-fronted geese."
Standing in line for scarce water behind both endangered fish and agriculture, Lower Klamath Lake has watched one marsh after another dry up in recent years. Now migratory geese, ducks and other waterfowl that come here by the millions, following the Pacific Flyway, are so closely packed together that an outbreak of avian cholera has killed more than 10,000 birds, mostly pintail ducks, Ross' geese, snow geese and now coots.
First reported in the United States in the 1940s, the disease is not new to the refuge. Bald eagles that congregate here in winter depend on the deadly bacteria to provide them easy food. But what is different about this year is that only half the refuge's 31,000 acres of marsh are flooded, creating perfect conditions for a broader kill off.
'Everglades of the West'
Lying on the east side of the Cascade Range along the Oregon-California border, the shallow lakes and marshes of the Upper Klamath Basin were once known as the Everglades of the West, providing a place to rest and eat for untold millions of birds on the Pacific Flyway.
More than 260 species ? ruddy ducks, cinnamon teal, white-faced ibis, sandhill cranes, white pelicans, snowy egrets and bald eagles ? pass through in the spring. Some stay the summer to breed, but most fly north to the Arctic to nest, returning here in the fall. Some spend the winter, and others continue south to California's Central Valley and the Salton Sea.
The historic refuge got its origins after wildlife photographer William L. Finley wrote a story for Atlantic Monthly about market hunters wiping out white egrets and grebes here for feathers to decorate ladies' hats.
President Theodore Roosevelt, an avid bird hunter and amateur taxidermist in his youth, signed the executive order creating Lower Klamath in 1908. It was the second of 55 refuges he would create, but the first to offer a large area of land for habitat.
In the 1950s the refuge would see 5 million to 7 million birds annually. Now numbers have dropped to about 2 million, primarily due to the loss of nesting habitat in the far north.
But it still "may be the most important real estate for migratory birds in North America,'" said refuge manager Ron Cole.
The problem is that it is at the end of a long line for water, legally and literally. When it comes to water in the West, first in time is first in right.

Three years earlier, in 1905, Congress created the Klamath Reclamation Project, which created a vast complex of pumps and canals that drained lakes and marshes and fed water to farmlands. The refuge started receiving water from the project in the 1940s, when a tunnel was cut to pump excess water out of Tule Lake, the end of the line for the water running through the irrigation project.
Tule Lake remained the primary source of the refuge's water until 2006, when farmers lost a subsidized electric rate that made it cheap to pump water. Now most of the water for the refuge comes from the Klamath River, through the Ady Canal.
No matter the source, the refuge does not get water until the fish and the farms are satisfied. The last full delivery was in 2006.
"It worked well for decades," said Cole, until more water had to be allocated to the river for endangered salmon, and to Upper Klamath Lake for endangered suckers.
Now it is the refuge that suffers from drought.
Incinerator takes care of dead birds
Small piles of white feathers and bones covered with dried red flesh dot the matted rushes and mudflats, all that is left after bald eagles and other predators fed on the goose carcasses. Some of the coots with their black heads and round slate-gray bodies were sprawled in the mud, unable to reach the shelter of the rushes before lying down to die. Mauser picked up a few by their wings and laid them in the back of his pickup truck.
At the refuge maintenance yard, the smell of burned flesh and feathers hung in the air. Mauser swung open the heavy door of an incinerator, placed the dead birds inside, then flipped a switch to ignite the gas.
Research indicates the disease spreads bird-to-bird, and outbreaks occur in cold months when birds are packed close together. Volunteers in airboats have picked up 3,500 dead birds and brought them to the incinerator to limit the spread of the bacteria. But with so many of the birds managing to hide before they die, most will never be found. About half the infected birds survive to spread the bacteria. Birds can die so quickly they fall out of the sky.
Summer not looking good
Record rains in March allowed the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to start delivering all the water the refuge could take through the Ady Canal, but that will only be enough to flood 4,000 acres more before it runs out, said Cole. Prospects for this summer are not looking good.
Meanwhile, a deal that raises the refuge's water priority on a par with farms, while laying out how water is divided in drought years, has been stymied in Congress.
"Birds are hardwired to follow migratory routes they have followed since time immemorial," said Bob Sallinger, conservation director for Portland Audubon, which has joined two dozen conservation groups demanding Interior Secretary Ken Salazar assure the refuge gets the water it needs. "They are going to return to these places. The question is, will they find something when they get there."
