A software engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of a variety of software solutions. They might be involved in the design and testing of anything from computers games and business applications, to operating systems and advanced software for the control of highly technical hardware and equipment. Once the system had been fully designed software engineers then test, debug, and maintain the systems. The work undertaken by software engineers is generally of a highly complex and technical nature, and involves the application of computer science and mathematics in an environment which is constantly evolving as a result of technological advances.

Tasks &Responsibilities::

Common Painkillers May Help Prevent Skin Cancer: Study

TUESDAY, May 29 (HealthDay News) -- Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) -- which include medicine cabinet staples such as aspirin, Motrin and Aleve -- appears to significantly lower the risk for developing several major forms of skin cancer, a new Danish study reveals.

What's more, the apparent protective impact of both prescription and nonprescription NSAIDs on skin cancer risk seems to be stronger the longer someone takes them.

Over-the-counter NSAIDs are used to control pain, fever and swelling. NSAIDs also include prescription medicines called COX-2 enzyme inhibitors, such as Celebrex (celecoxib).

"Our study showed that users of common painkillers, known as NSAIDs, have a lower risk of the three major types of skin cancer, [including] malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma," said study lead author, Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir, at the department of clinical epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark.

"The greatest effect," she noted, "was found for squamous cell carcinomas and malignant melanoma, especially when [these painkillers were] taken frequently and over a long time period."

The study appears in the May 29 online issue of the journal Cancer.

The authors noted that prior work supported the notion that NSAIDs may offer some measure of protection against cancer (most notably colorectal cancer), by specifically impeding the cancer-causing activities of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzymes.

However, the team suggested that past investigations into how NSAIDs may affect skin cancer risk, in particular, had key design problems that undercut efforts to nail down any NSAID-skin cancer connection.

For the new study, the researchers analyzed prescription databases and health information registries including the Danish Cancer Registry and the Danish Civil Registration System.

The team focused on diagnostic and death records concerning nearly 2,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, about 13,300 cases of basal cell carcinoma and nearly 3,250 cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed between 1991 and 2009 when the patients were at least 20 years old.

In turn, prescription histories were gathered for both the cancer patient group and almost 179,000 healthy Danes. Records covered the use of both low- and high-dose aspirin (ranging from 75 milligrams to 500 milligrams), so-called "nonselective" NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen [Advil] and naproxen [Aleve]), and both older and newer types of COX-2 inhibitors. Researchers noted the number of prescriptions issued per patient and their length of use, with short-term use defined as fewer than seven years.

The result: The relative risk for squamous cell carcinoma was found to have dropped by 15 percent among those Danes who had filled more than two NSAID prescriptions, compared to those who had filled two or less.

Similarly, malignant melanoma risk fell by nearly as much (13 percent) among those filling more than two NSAID prescriptions.

However, the same dynamic was generally not seen with regards to basal cell carcinoma. But taking NSAIDs for long periods of time, and at relatively high doses, was associated with a reduced risk (between 15 and 21 percent), specifically for basal cell cases that manifested in skin regions that typically experience relatively little sun exposure (areas other than the neck or head).

On that front, long-term users and those who took NSAIDs at relatively higher doses appeared to benefit from the strongest protective effect, suggesting that when it comes to skin cancer risk reduction, more NSAID use is better.

The researchers pointed out that the NSAID-cancer connection could be affected by a range of lifestyle factors they did not account for, such as an individual's specific skin type or sun exposure patterns.

But Johannesdottir added that "we hope that our finding will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention. Also, the potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use," she noted.

However, "other studies need to detail the association further and to examine benefits versus risks," she cautioned. "Meanwhile, the most important prevention against skin cancer remains sun protection."

Meanwhile, Dr. William Ting, a private practice dermatologist in San Ramon, Calif., praised the study despite agreeing that many factors are at play when it comes to skin cancer formation.

"Now we have a better understanding that inflammation also plays a significant role in cancer formation and even skin cancers," he said.

And, "this exciting article gives physicians and consumers a relatively simple way of diminishing one's risk of skin cancer by doing what most of us are doing already for heart health," Ting added. Ting also advised that people consult with their doctor before starting on any blood thinner.

While the study found an association between skin cancer risk and NSAIDs, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Research Unveils Varying Cancer Wait Times at Australia&#39;s Public ...

In a recent report, it has been revealed that there is variation seen in waiting times for elective cancer surgery at Australia?s public hospital. It was found in the myhospitals website that in comparison to the waiting times in for the treatment at Royal Price Alfred at Hospital in Sydney, The Canberra Hospital took a lot time last year, thereby making it all the more clear that there was variation existing in the waiting time for the treatment for elective cancer surgery for July 2010 to June 2011.

Direct mail fail ? Rantings of a sub-editor

Facts and fingers. Mostly fingers.

When you espresso-drinking types decide to grace our inboxes with a spot of direct marketing, your main goals are to pick up new clients and stimulate repeat business. Even if you don?t achieve that, hopefully you?ll still increase awareness of your brand. If your message is binned without being read, that?s disappointing. If your recipient opts out, that?s the worst?case scenario. Right?

Or how about when the targeted customer, upon reading your carefully crafted prose, froths violently at the mouth and forwards your email to, um, me, with the following comment:

?Why you would trust anyone to work with you on direct mail when their own attempt at email direct marketing is so shabby is beyond me. It?s the mix of fonts, colours, bold; the length, lack of salutation or sign off, not to mention poor sentence construction and punctuation, that make me go grrrr.?

That?s how this little treat fell into my hands. And, would you believe it, the point of the direct-marketing email in question was to market? direct mail. Ouch. A double whammy of self defeat. To see the email in all its glory, click here.?I?ve removed the company?s name and links, because I?m not a total bitch, honest.

In the interests of positivity (which is definitely a word, because the Spice Girls said so) here are five points that could have made it better:

1. Length and structure
This email is well over 1,000 words long ? that?s at least three times as long as it should be. Try to limit yourself to a maximum of 300 words, and use a three?point structure so that you don?t overwhelm your reader?s tiny mind. For example:

• Outline the client?s possible desire or difficulty
• Describe your company?s solution
• Provide the next step, whether it?s a link, phone number or email address.

2. Style and layout
Make sure the email contains clear branding ? your logo, your font, your colours. This one was so generic?looking that at first we thought it might be a scam, and had to confirm with the company that it was genuine.

When it comes to the text, don?t mix colour, underline and bold (unless you want it look like a GCSE computer skills project from the 1990s). Choose between either colour or bold, and use it sparingly ? and if you choose colour, make sure it fits with your branding and that it matches, or complements, the colour of any hyperlinks. Underline is so last century, baby; don?t do it. Also, do you really need to use block capitals? I THINK NOT.

3. Spelling and grammar
Where to start? The mistakes in this piece smack you in the face like a sack full of hammers. But here are a few of the less idiotic ones.

• Don?t refer to your company as a female, for flip?s sake. Most style guides suggest the singular (?Relfco and its partners?), but some companies prefer the plural (?Relfco and their partners?) because they think it sounds more human. Either is fine, just make sure you?re consistent.
• Remember that spellcheck is a little bastard. Only a human would know that you meant ?whereas? in the sentence: ?ROI for Direct Mail has steadily increased over the last 3 years, were as digitals has declined.?
• Read it out loud. That way you?ll spot the awkwardness of sentences such as: ?We will do all of the or part of, the work for you? ? and either annihilate them on sight (recommended), or at least improve the punctuation.
• Consider employing a professional proofreader, or at least running the document past the most pedantic person you have to hand. Not everyone will spot a misplaced modifier, but if you?re sending the email to several thousand people, some definitely will. Here?s one, where the ?its? and the ?we? disagree: ?In its simplest form, we work in partnership with local marketing experts.? Not the end of the world, but some people judge you on this stuff. Some people, eh. No-one I know, obviously.

4. Wild claims

Stay focused on what you can actually deliver, and the benefits of that to the client. You won?t win business by promising the world. Unless you can actually deliver it, of course ? in which case, I want one. For example:

• ?Mail is engaging. Consumers spend on average 10 minutes reading mailshots.? Per item? (Sounds unlikely.) In a lifetime? (Not very impressive.)
• ?It lets you have a one to one communication which delivers more emotional intensity than any other medium.? Is anyone really going to believe that receiving marketing mail is an emotionally intense experience? Delete.
• ?[Mail] affects all five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. Mail is the only medium to provide the creative possibilities to engage the customers on all levels.? Yes, I often sniff, lick and listen to my letters before opening them. But enough about me.

5. Beginnings and endings

How you start and finish matters. If you?re contacting an existing client, you want them to feel valued and remembered. If you?re contacting a potential new client, remember that you?re nothing to them, as yet. And in both cases, bear in mind that unsolicited mail is rarely welcome ? so you need to be as polite, professional and to-the-frickin-point as possible.

Use a program that allows you to address each recipient by name, and check that their name displays correctly. Most people are more likely to read on if they see ?Dear Cathy? than if they see ?Dear Ms C Relf?. Though it really is time you stopped reading my mail.

Also, make sure you sign off properly. You?re reaching out to new business ? so to whom should it reach back? And how? Be friendly, write like a real person, and give options for how to get in touch. Ahead of the Curve: Fair Use Concepts and the Oracle-Google Lawsuit

There are few issues more confusing in the general populace than the concept of ?fair use? in copyright law. ?The verdict in the Oracle-Google lawsuit over infringement of Oracle?s copyrighted code is yet another example of how the concept of fair use is vaguely understood. ?Here are some basics on fair use in copyright law.?

Copyright Law

The legal provisions for?copyright protection are as old as the US Constitution itself.?

In Section 8, paragraph 8, of the Constitution, Congress is given the power to enact copyright protection in the following terms:?

To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;

Congress has done this over the years by enacting copyright, patent, and trademark laws that secure exclusive rights to inventors and creative artists.?

However, those exclusive rights have limits, the most obvious of which is the ?limited time? frame for those rights. ?All copyrights and patents have expiration dates, at which point the invention or creative expression becomes part of the public domain.?

Furthermore, there are limits to the exclusive rights held by inventors and artists, the most prominent of which is the ?fair use? clause.?

Fair Use

The intention of the fair use concept, as established by legal precedent, is to balance the exclusive rights granted to a creator with the right of the public to criticize, discuss, and distribute the basic concepts of protected works. ?

The most obvious example of this concept is the ?quotation? of a protected work, either by a critic or news reporter, or other person who ?repeats? the copyrighted work as part of critique or review.?

If such quotation of a protected work were protected, it has been felt that?the free speech rights granted by the First Amendment would be frustrated by the rights granted to a copyright owner.?

However, the extent and boundaries of the rights granted by copyright law are often a very vague and gray-zone area.?

The exact boundaries defining where the exclusive rights of copyright end and the fair use rights of the public begin have historically been determined in court on a case-by-case basis, and not precisely defined in legislative terms.?

The Oracle-Google lawsuit is destined to become the latest court case defining this boundary of software copyright laws.?

Fair Use Law?

Title 17 of the United States Code defines copyright law and the rights granted to inventors and creators of expressive ideas.?

The concept of fair use, as applicable to all situations, is defined in Chapter 1 of Title 17, in section 107.

This section is extremely short and vague, however. We have reprinted the entire section defining fair use in the code.?

?107 ? Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the?fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in?copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for?purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies?for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of?copyright. In determining?whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a?fair use the factors to be considered shall include?

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether?such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in?relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

As can be seen, the concept of fair use is both extremely vague and broad reaching.?

All of these core concepts, taken together, are generally considered in a court case involving whether a copyright infringement constitutes fair use.?

Many people, particularly persons posting copyrighted material on YouTube or other Internet sites, seem to think that fair use can be determined simply by whether a person is charging for access to the copyrighted material. If they are not charging for access, they think, the reproduction of copyrighted material is fair use.?

This line of thinking, however, involves only the first point of the above four aspects of fair use.?

Such a criterion is not enough to define a fair use situation of copyrighted material. The ?purpose? of the reuse of copyrighted material is only one of the factors to be examined.?

All of the four concepts listed above need to be considered when determining fair use of copyrighted material.?

Note: ?An extremely good single page ?check list? summary of these concepts, as published by the Columbia University Library, can be found at:?http://copyright.columbia.edu/copyright/files/2009/10/fairusechecklist.pdf.?This checklist is meant to be used as a guideline, however, and is not a definitive legal document.?

Particular Situations Defined in Legislation?

Although the definition of fair use is vague in the code, there are additional sections that further define fair use in particular situations, some of which are listed below:?

• the right of a library to make copies?
• the right of a purchaser of copyrighted material to resell that material without permission from the copyright owner,?
• the rights of educational institutions to use copyrighted material for teaching
• the use of copyrighted material in jukeboxes and radio transmissions?
• the retransmission of copyrighted material over digital satellites and cable television systems

Each of these particular situations is precisely defined in various sections of the code, as it has been amended over time.?

The Definition of Fair Use by Court Cases ?

Most particular situations have been determined by cases brought to court, however, and such cases then become precedent for further defining the concepts of copyright and fair use.?

For example, the right of owners of VCRs to videotape televised copyrighted materials was established by a lawsuit brought by Universal Studios against Sony, when the Betamax VCR was first introduced. Universal claimed that home taping of video movies was an infringement of the exclusive right of copyright granted to the creator of the movie or television show.?

This particular court case lasted three years and involved a series of decisions in lower courts that first ruled in favor of Universal Studios, then Sony, then back to Universal.?

In January of 1984, the Supreme Court eventually ruled that home use of a VCR, which was not used for commercial ventures nor was recopied and distributed (whether commercially or not) constituted fair use of the copyrighted material. ?

The concept of fair use has, as this example illustrates, been defined over time by particular court cases.?

The Oracle-Google lawsuit is, therefore, yet another in a long line of legal precedents defining the concept of fair use.?

The Oracle-Google Lawsuit?

The much publicized Oracle lawsuit against Google generally summarizes the jury?s verdict as ?mixed.??

However, such an assessment is far from the last word on this issue, as that particular verdict involved only Oracle?s claims of copyright infringement, not patent infringement.?

Oracle originally argued that Google had infringed on?seven patents held by Oracle, all involving Java programming. Over time, those claims were reduced to just infringement on?two patents. In addition, Oracle claimed copyright infringement on Google?s use of 37 Java APIs (application programming interfaces).?

During the course of the trial, however, the case was split into two separate phases, with the copyright infringement claims being litigated and a verdict reached prior to any proceedings regarding the patent infringement claims.?

On Monday, the jury ruled on the copyright infringement claims only. The very same jury has now begun hearing arguments on the patent infringement claims.?

The jury ruled that Google actually did copy 37 separate APIs used in Java programming, but was unable to reach a decision on whether such copying was protected under the fair use doctrine, which Google claimed in defense, having admitted they did copy the APIs.?

What Is an API?

The purpose of an API is to define the way in which a program interacts with another program.?

Google?s Android system uses Java APIs because most developers write code for applications in Java. The API allows an Android device to receive and send requests to other Java programs in a standardized manner.?

Each of the 37 Java APIs that Oracle claims under copyright consists of lines of code. However, Oracle has not claimed that Google actually copied the exact lines of code that constitute the API. Instead, the claim is that the structure and format of the API is copyrightable and that Google?s use of the API constitutes infringement.?

Google, however, claims that the use of the APIs is fair use by applying the four basic concepts of fair use:?
