Shanda Group, the famous Chinese operator of online games and e-book publisher, is set to launch its long awaited Android-based smartphone on June 6. This will be the third hardware venture after the company rolled out its PC entertainment center Shanda Box and its Bambook e-books and e-readers, which were launched in 2010. The Shanda smartphone is powered by a 1GHz dual core microchips and Mali-400 GPU, it also equips with a 4.3 inch qHD display produced by Sharp. Local media reports said the price tag could be set as low as 1,199 yuan (US$190). The smartphone will use the Bambook brand which has become a familiar name for Shanda customers ?

Shanda?s smartphone project follows the entry of other Chinese internet giants like Alibaba and Baidu into the market. Each phone will be packed with it?s own lineup of web services. It is interesting to observe all these Chinese internet tech giants venturing to make Android smartphones in China. Major challenges for internet companies include how to win enough buyers for their smartphones and retain them as loyal customers. Shanda is seen to be taking an alternative approach to other internet enterprises by offering a massive library of e-book titles and online video games to buyers of its Bambook handsets.

The main business isn?t about selling hardware, it?s more about promoting dedicated online services and selling digital content. Amazon Kindle Fire is the best example on this kind of business model. We will be looking forward on how the Shanda Bambook Phone aiming to become Kindle Fire in China.
