ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft have revealed Saturn's moon Titan likely harbors a layer of liquid water under its ice shell.
Researchers saw a large amount of squeezing and stretching as the moon orbited Saturn. They deduced that if Titan were composed entirely of stiff rock, the gravitational attraction of Saturn would cause bulges, or solid "tides," on the moon only 3 feet (1 meter) in height. Spacecraft data show Saturn creates solid tides approximately 30 feet (10 meters) in height, which suggests Titan is not made entirely of solid rocky material. The finding appears in today's edition of the journal Science.
"Cassini's detection of large tides on Titan leads to the almost inescapable conclusion that there is a hidden ocean at depth," said Luciano Iess, the paper's lead author and a Cassini team member at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. "The search for water is an important goal in solar system exploration, and now we've spotted another place where it is abundant."
Titan takes only 16 days to orbit Saturn, and scientists were able to study the moon's shape at different parts of its orbit. Because Titan is not spherical, but slightly elongated like a football, its long axis grew when it was closer to Saturn. Eight days later, when Titan was farther from Saturn, it became less elongated and more nearly round. Cassini measured the gravitational effect of that squeeze and pull.
Scientists were not sure Cassini would be able to detect the bulges caused by Saturn's pull on Titan. By studying six close flybys of Titan from Feb. 27, 2006, to Feb. 18, 2011, researchers were able to determine the moon's internal structure by measuring variations in the gravitational pull of Titan using data returned to NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN).
"We were making ultrasensitive measurements, and thankfully Cassini and the DSN were able to maintain a very stable link," said Sami Asmar, a Cassini team member at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "The tides on Titan pulled up by Saturn aren't huge compared to the pull the biggest planet, Jupiter, has on some of its moons. But, short of being able to drill on Titan's surface, the gravity measurements provide the best data we have of Titan's internal structure."
An ocean layer does not have to be huge or deep to create these tides. A liquid layer between the external, deformable shell and a solid mantle would enable Titan to bulge and compress as it orbits Saturn. Because Titan's surface is mostly made of water ice, which is abundant in moons of the outer solar system, scientists infer Titan's ocean is likely mostly liquid water.
On Earth, tides result from the gravitational attraction of the moon and sun pulling on our surface oceans. In the open oceans, those can be as high as two feet (60 centimeters). While water is easier to move, the gravitational pulling by the sun and moon also causes Earth's crust to bulge in solid tides of about 20 inches (50 centimeters).
The presence of a subsurface layer of liquid water at Titan is not itself an indicator for life. Scientists think life is more likely to arise when liquid water is in contact with rock, and these measurements cannot tell whether the ocean bottom is made up of rock or ice. The results have a bigger implication for the mystery of methane replenishment on Titan.
"The presence of a liquid water layer in Titan is important because we want to understand how methane is stored in Titan's interior and how it may outgas to the surface," said Jonathan Lunine, a Cassini team member at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. "This is important because everything that is unique about Titan derives from the presence of abundant methane, yet the methane in the atmosphere is unstable and will be destroyed on geologically short timescales."
A liquid water ocean, "salted" with ammonia, could produce buoyant ammonia-water liquids that bubble up through the crust and liberate methane from the ice. Such an ocean could serve also as a deep reservoir for storing methane.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. DSN, also managed by JPL, is an international network of antennas that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions and radio and radar astronomy observations for the exploration of the solar system and the universe. The network also supports selected Earth-orbiting missions. Cassini's radio science team is based at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Being a mother to three children has its perks. On holidays I get lots of cards, every morning I wake up to multiple kisses wishing me a good day and I get to see three little people grow into adults. However, there is a downside to having a family of 5, the rising grocery store bills. It used to be that every time I got paid (twice a month) I would go to my local supermarket and buy enough groceries for EVERYONE in our immeadite family (including a super hungry preteen boy) and I would walk out with about $300 damage to my debit card. I repeated this twice a month with a monthly grocery bill of over $600! Needless to say I was frustrated by the whole process. We did not have money to burn (especially with repeatedly having to buy new clothes for my growing kids) so I decided to try a couple of new strategies in my quest for a lower grocery bill. This is what I tried:
I tried using coupons but I could NEVER find any coupons for things we ate, plus there are rarely coupons for HEALTHY eating.
1.I tried buying all generic brands but I found some (if not most) of the products?nasty.
2.I tried shopping exclusively at bulk clubs like Sam?s, Costcos, or BJ?s but I found that I spent more and had ALOT of cans of green beans left over.
So what did I do? Well unknowningly I decided to STOP eating a lot of processed foods, I began eat clean and I incorporated the following five strategies to regain control over my grocery bill.
1. I cut out buying processed foods by 80% and instead I exculsively decided to buy fresh, real foods over their processed counterparts. With a family of five (including a husband who loves processed foods) it was to the point that the majority of our grocery cart was full of processed foods (instant soups, crackers, chips, cereal, spaghetti sauce, etc) and with that type of food came a high grocery bill. So over a year ago I decided to try this ?thing? about eating better. I tried to buy fresh at my local supermarket but I was still spending a ton of money. So I decided to check out my local Farmer?s Market?the fruits and veggies were much cheaper.
For example, at the Farmer?s Market I could buy a huge head of lettuce for between .75 -$ 1.25 a head compared to 1.75at the Supermarket! I could buy a big bag of Idaho potatoes for $1.50 a bag compared to $2.50 a bag! If you add these up you will save a TON of money. I started off small and began to buy more fruits around the house. Then came more vegetables, before long EVERYTHING in my shopping cart was fresh?with the exceptions of a few items. Now with growing kids, I realize I can?t buy EVERYTHING fresh, so I will go to my local store and bag a box of chips or some instant spaghetti sauce when I am crunched for time.
2. I started to plan out my food shopping excursions. I used to go to the local supermarket and buy a ton of meat and a ton of sides and I was ?set? for the remainder of the week but my pockets would still be ?hurting?. So I decided to be strategic how I shopped. For example, I only buy meat once a month?yes I just said I only buy meat once a month. Here?s how I do it. Since I am on a healthy kick, I buy my meat from three places: direct from a local farm, the local Farmer?s Market or from a Shopping Club. When it is that time of the month to buy my meat, I buy a lot at a time ( and I may spend $100 at one time ) and I seperate and freeze everything. A couple of months ago I even found out about a service that buys meat from a local, organic farm for almost half the cost if I bought it in a Supermarket.
For example, I decided to buy a 40 pound box of chicken breasts for $1.69 a pound, which equaled up to roughly $67.60 a case. If I had bought it in the store, I would of paid $2.29 a pound for chicken that a. is not organic or range free b. not a good quality c. that is not fresh. The entire case of chicken lasted an entire month! So for $67 we ate some of the best chicken I had ever tasted! Sometimes I will go to the Farmer?s Market and get 10 pounds of leg quarters for 1.49 a pound and when I get home I will seperate 4 quarters out and wrap and freeze them for later use. I buy my vegetables, fruits and grains about 2 twice a month and I average about about $75 per trip. Since we use a TON of vegetables and fruit, I buy these more frequently but I only get what we will eat so I won?t be stuck with rotting food. Today, I went to the local Farmer?s Market and only spent $75.33 but my cart was full!
Even if you do not live near an awesome market like me, did you know that the local Amish in your community sell their meats and goods on Saturdays? Their prices are reasonable and all of their food is range and hormone free. In addition, in any area there are farms that will sell to individuals fresh meat! Cut out the ?middle man? prices!
3. We bought a deep freezer from a friend and began to freeze food. For a long time the only freezer we had in the house was the one beside the refrigerator. One day my husband?s friend was moving and he wanted to get rid of his deep freezer for cheap. We paid a cool $75 for it and ever since then I have been a freezing queen. All the meat I bought in bulk, I wrap in Saran and Reynold?s Wrap and then put in sealable Freezer Bags and when I thaw the meat it?s as good as new! You can find deep freezers on Craigslist or at local yard sale..they?re a great investment. At any given time, I have at least two weeks up of meat, frozen vegetables, frozen bread, etc in my deep freezer. There are times when I make too much of a certain dish and instead of throwing away the leftovers, I freeze them for a ?rainy? day when I do not feel like cooking.
The deep freezer is small enough to fit into our garage but large enough so that I can store meat and anything else in it. Whenever I put new meat in it , I rotate the older meat to the top to make sure the food is being properly used.
4. I quit allowing my kids to snack all day on random snacks. When I would go to the grocery store I noticed that a lot of the items in the cart were snacks for the kids. Between Goldfish crackers, chips, snack cakes, etc my kids were increasingly becoming more and more dependent on snacking. ON Saturday and Sundays, I noticed that that is all they would do all day so that would cause for me to have to continually go to the grocery store.
So I decided to get smart with them and only buy 4 snacks for the entire month. Yes, that means only one box of Goldfish crackers, one box of chips, etc..this made them think if they really wanted to eat their snacks up in one month. So instead of them always reaching for their traditional snacks, they would have no choice but to choose the apples, oranges, grapes, strawberries, etc. available for them to eat on. I found that having a lot of fruit was not only cheaper but a lot healthier for my children. For a basket full of each fruit I would spend maybe $15 compared to the $25 I would spend on snacks.
5. I learned to cook?for real cook. Okay before everyone looks shocked, let me say this?I used to NEVER cook. No, really I was a ?Take Out Queen? but that all changed when the toddlers came (respectively in 2008 and 2010). I had to begin cooking so I bought a couple of cook books (namely Oprah?s Cookbook) and began to follow a TON of food blogs and I pressed ?play?. I started to try recipes and before long I as a ?pro?. Naturally I needed more spices to season my veggies and meats so again I decided to go to the Farmer?s Market to buy their fresh spices. The cost of fresh spices was at least 80% cheaper than the store. For example, I would pay $1.20 for a container of Garlic Salt at the market but at the Supermarket it would cost $2.50!
Having all of these fresh spices, food and ideas all seemed to work together and I was a cook! I basically cook 3-5 times a week and when I don?t cook we are eating leftovers. Wasting food is a ?bad word? in my house so all my kids know to eat?or else. Quite frankly, once I started to buy real food, I began to want to find ways to cook it so some nights I stay up late Googling, Pinteresting (I know this is not a word) or watching Food Network in search for a new recipe! Just the other night, I made crock pot enchiladas from a recipe I found on online!
6. I became strategic about the sales offered at my local supermarket. Now don?t get me wrong..all because I do not shop a lot at my local markets alot does not mean I do not research their weekly sales and take advantage of them. For example, Publix had a sale on Goldfish crackers for 1.00 a bag two weeks ago. I went into the store and got at least 10 bags..just for a rainy day. Then I noticed that jar of an expensive brand of Fettuccine Alfredo sauce was BOGO free with one retailing for $1.50..needless to say I bought a bunch of those. Whatever the sale is in the paper, I look to see if we eat the food and if it?s a ?go? I buy it?even if I do not use it immediately.
All of these things allow me to have a super cheap grocery bill..Just today I went to the Farmer?s Market and spent $75 on a TON of vegetables and some meat! I have been using this method for about a year and ever since I started to do this my bill is cut in half!
Now what do you do to save money at the grocery store? Have you tried any of these methods? Do you own a deep freezer? Share with us your best tips.?

Features a home can be a very expensive ordeal. If you do not have much money for cheap furniture may be the only option, but you should always aim to find the right quality at unbeatable prices. The price to be paid for the furniture is easily determined as the time passes. A table of good quality that comes with a midrange price, is expected to be much longer than the table of the ten dollars you get a bargain price.
In many cases, with furniture, you get what you pay if you buy cheap furniture, it may seem strange to the rest can be from home, they break very easily and should not be long.
Many discount stores such as dollar stores offer low-cost furniture made. You can even, in many shops of charities. Buy Furniture In places like these is not really recommended. It is not really useful to have a TV, set the too expensive for a cheap unit to buy right? No, it does not work. Although you can sometimes pick up a good product at a lower price, it is best to avoid discount if you want quality furniture.
You are more likely to go directly to a furniture dealer. I decorated my living that way. I also have a coffee table ideal for raising cheap, but you know they are good. The low price is just about the only good thing about the cheap furniture. Bargain for the quality is easy to find and everyone can get one.
Sellers are always happy to help you in your purchase, in a furniture store, so they earn a commission. They should not be disturbed by it, if they work hard to help you.
Always check the clearance. Open spaces can with a pre-season stock or stock-display may be filled. You may need to hunt a little bit here, but you can actually find furniture at lower prices high. It is not always a guarantee of good will, but the articles are generally of good quality.
There you will find to buy good furniture if you use it. I probably would not buy a used mattress or sofa worn, but there are still some good quality furniture at flea markets and classified ads. In addition to these articles used furniture must only be repaired or cleaned to a large piece at a price you can afford.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Iran should be invited to an international meeting on the Syria conflict in Geneva at the weekend, drawing
But the United States swiftly rejected the Russian proposal.
"It is better to involve Iran in the settlement (of the Syrian crisis)," Putin told a news conference following talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II on the shores of the Dead Sea.
"In any case it would complicate the process (if Iran is ignored)."
Wrapping up a one-day visit to Jordan, on a Middle East tour that had already taken him to Israel and the West Bank, Putin said Iran's support is needed.
"The more Syria's neighbours are involved in the settlement process the better. Ignoring these possibilities, these interests would be counterproductive, as diplomats say," he added.
"It is better to secure its support," said Putin.
The United States said, meanwhile, that it was increasingly likely to join the international meeting on the Syria crisis but rejected Russian calls for Iran to take part.
"We are getting closer but we don't have any decisions yet," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington.
But concerning Iran she added: "Given its support for the regime and its continued behavior vis-a-vis Syria, we just don't see it as able to make a helpful contribution right now."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier told reporters in Jordan that Iran should be invited to Saturday's meeting in Geneva.
"It should certainly be done," he said, adding that he would take part in the summit.
If Iran is not invited "then all those who can really influence all the main Syrian sides will not be present," he said.
UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, who wants to gather the major powers in Geneva in a final bid to get agreement on a political transition plan for Syria, has yet to officially announce the meeting.
But Lavrov said he would still go, even if Iran is not invited.
"I will go. But in that case we will simply be talking about how to further gather together all the participants who are necessary in order to use this chance because there is no guarantee it will be crowned with success," he added.
"But this chance has to be used. For this to happen you need to gather all those who have real influence on the situation. Iran is no doubt one of them."
"One needs to agree to influence all Syrian sides so that they themselves sit down at the negotiating table and begin to get along and look for consensus solutions," he said.
"Only they themselves can find agreement, and outside players can help them get together."
It is not still clear if Britain, France and China -- the other three permanent members of the UN Security Council along with Russia and the United States -- will attend the Geneva meeting.
In Jordan, Putin opened a guesthouse for Christian pilgrims at Baptism site in the Jordan Valley, where many Christians believe Jesus was baptised.
He arrived in Jordan from the West Bank, where he met Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas during a brief visit to Bethlehem, a day after talks in Israel with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres.
"I did not set myself a task to negotiate a personal meeting between the two leaders, but I am under the impression that agreement is possible," between Israel and the Palestinian leaders, Putin said in Jordan.
The peacemaking Quartet, which groups Russia, the United States, the European Union and the United Nations, has been trying to nudge the two sides back to direct talks, on hold since late 2010.
But little progress has been made, as the Palestinians insist on a settlement freeze before talks resume, while Israel calls for new discussions without preconditions.
During his visit to Israel, his first since returning to the Kremlin for a historic third term in May, Putin was urged to act on Iran's controversial nuclear programme.
"The Iranian problem is not a simple one but still I proceed from the fact that it can and should be solved through absolutely peaceful means, by way of a negotiation process and on the basis of respect of the right of the Iranian people to the peaceful use of energy," Putin told reporters.
"With absolute guarantees provided to the world community that the realisation of this programme would not lead to the emergence of nuclear weapons in this country and will not facilitate the nuclear proliferation in the world."
The international community has been pursuing talks with Tehran, but three high-level meetings -- the most recent in Moscow -- have failed to produce any breakthrough.

Jenny Groothuis, mom of 15, is not afraid to admit that parenting a large family takes some special skills. ?Parenting a large family requires a unique skill set, it?s true,? says Jenny. ?But once you figure out what strategies work for your household, you can get a nice groove going no matter what size your family is.?
But for moms who have trouble just getting two or three kids up and fed in the morning, how do moms like Jenny manage 15? Jenny explains, ?My kids help out with meal-planning, cooking and even cleaning up the kitchen. Especially now that I have older kids (my oldest are teenagers) they can really do a lot. We don?t plan elaborate meals and we don?t have a lot of side dishes. We eat a lot of beans, brown rice, fruit and veggies. Meat is like a condiment for us. We keep it simple and healthy and that works perfectly for our family.?
With 17 people in the house, Jenny has to face between four and five loads of laundry every day. But she does have some strategies that make laundry easier. ?Each room has its own laundry basket. When it gets full, it gets taken downstairs to get washed. The kids all put away their own clothes. Even the youngest ones are responsible, although they do get help from their older siblings. The great thing about having lots of kids is that the little ones learn a lot just by watching and modeling after the older children.?
"Life is so much simpler when you don?t have extra clutter around."
One of the best ways to stay on top of things in a large family is not to go overboard on anything. Jenny says, ?I try to keep clutter to a minimum and we don?t keep extras of things we don?t need. Each of my kids has a few pairs of pants, a couple pairs of shorts and a few shirts. When someone gets a hole in their jeans, that?s when we buy a new pair. Life is so much simpler when you don?t have extra clutter around.?
Angela De Hoyos has seven children spanning from 10 months to 10 years old. She says, ?My favorite thing about having a large family is the friendships we have. We have fun together, we rely on each other and in reality, it forces me to be more organized. When I had fewer kids, I found I could spoil them a little more, let them get away with a little more, and let the house go a little more. Now that we have so many, I have to be more organized or we run out of dishes to eat on and clothes to wear.?
Over the years, Angela has developed some excellent tips for keeping her house running squeaky clean. ?Housework was never my strong suit but I have a few tips that work well for our family. The kids help out a lot. We recently upgraded to a fairly advanced chore system that we adapted from Accountable Kids and I am thrilled with the outcome. It?s a rule in our house to always have an empty kitchen sink at night. (This tricks me into doing my dishes!) We make sure to spend a couple focused minutes in the morning and at night picking up the main clutter spots and I take full advantage of five-minute room rescues. It?s a relief to know that you don?t need to clean the whole thing at once, but that just five minutes can make a huge difference. It?s a simple way to get motivated to get started? and started is halfway done in my book!?
Both Jenny and Angela recommend setting clear boundaries and knowing when to say no. ?No matter how big or small your family is, you have to learn your own limits,? Jenny says. ?Parenting is a big job and it?s so easy to get overwhelmed by just day-to-day life. Don?t agree to more than you want to do or accept more than you can handle. It?s OK to say no. People will respect you for knowing your own limits.?

?Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter? is a guilty pleasure; ?Brave? disappoints.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
My fellow film critics and I tend to use previous films of a similar genre to compare and contrast the worthiness of the latest entry in that genre. However, when your film is titled Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, there isn?t much hope of finding a similar effort for a side by side comparison. After all, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is still in production, and, like this film, is based on a novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the screen adaptation of his novel.?
Then it hit me. A standard historical drama that has a head-on collision with the utmost silliness and tries to play it straight; darn if that doesn?t describe last summer?s Cowboys & Aliens. Unfortunately, that film was a badly written mess, while Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is oddly endearing.?
Chalk this up as a guilty pleasure thanks in large part to the excellent visual imagery provided by director Timur Bekmambetov, the Russian-Kazakh film director known for two cult vampire Russian movies, Night Watch and Day Watch, as well as his action-packed American film debut Wanted. His vampires? mouths look like piranhas going in for the kill rather than the tame fangs we?ve come to expect from the Twilight series and the like.?
The other element that keeps us engaged is the excellent title performance by Brit Benjamin Walker. His Abraham Lincoln is but a boy when he is traumatized by the death of his mother. His initial foray into vamp hunting as a young man is based on a thirst for vengeance. He doesn?t know his mother?s killer, Jack Barts (Marton Csokas), is of the living dead variety until he finds out a bullet in the brain won?t kill the blood-sucking freak.?
Lincoln manages to escape thanks to help from a devoted vampire killer named Henry Sturges (Dominic Cooper), who takes him under his wing in true Karate Kid fashion showing him how to wield an ax for maximum vampire killing power.?
Why this works is that the story outside the vampire zone sweet spot is played straight and with some heart. His courtship of Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is understated and effective, and his decision to go into politics seems like a reasonable day job to go with his night job.?
Director Bekmambetov creates truly unusual action sequences ? a showdown between Honest Abe and Barts in the middle of a horse stampede is particularly inventive. But beyond the director?s inventive technique when it comes to vampire action, the film works because this version of Lincoln, despite his secret obsession, still feels like the president we revere from history, a true hero who believes in what is right, and that includes freeing slaves and slaying vampires.?
Yes, I just wrote that last sentence with a straight face.?
?
Not So ?Brave??
The latest Pixar animated adventure is Brave, set in medieval Scotland. The film was considered a risk since the animated heroine is a willful teenage girl Merida (voiced by Boardwalk Empire?s Kelly MacDonald), the idea being young boys would not be interested. The success of The Hunger Games perhaps squashed the notion that a young girl with archery skills would be a turn-off. However, what is a turn-off is the petulance of our heroine, in particular something she does to a family member (being vague on purpose so as not to spoil the twist) that makes her far from brave, it makes her selfish and petty. These are not characteristics one wants in a heroine we are expected to champion. The film features the gorgeous animation we would expect from the talented Pixar animators, but the story dampens the effectiveness of those visuals. ?

According to snake catcher Itti Myers of Katzrin, the snake that he carted off from a public rest room in Tiveria on Sunday, was a Burmese Python. He explained it was a young snake, about 3-years-old, measuring about three meters (yards) in length and judging by the snake?s behavior, it was most likely being raised in a home. He warned that while many people like raising snakes, this is not a particularly great snake for the home since it can grow quite large.
Wikipedia: Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus) is the largest subspecies of the Indian Python and one of the 6 largest snakes in the world, native to a large variation of tropic and subtropic areas of Southern- and Southeast Asia. They are often found near water and are sometimes semi-aquatic, but can also be found in trees. Wild individuals average 3.7 meters (12 ft) long, but may reach up to 5.74 meters (19 ft).

Daniel Cavicchi takes a detailed look at 19th-century music consumers.

Music was booming in America well before Edison's 1877 invention of the phonograph transformed it into a utility as ubiquitous as electricity and flush toilets, which took about 50 years. By 1900 there were symphony orchestras in Pittsburgh and St. Louis, opera houses in Newberry, South Carolina, and Central City, Colorado, and added to these exceptional cases were countless theaters in which music of every kind was performed willy-nilly, often on the same bill. In 1870, American strivers bought 80 home pianos daily and filled their benches with sheet music; a decade later, local brass bands were epidemic as sales of cornets and trombones skyrocketed. Yet because 19th-century America produced no opera or symphony composers of note, all this action is still ignored by a defensively snobbish American musicological establishment.
Music scholar Daniel Cavicchi isn't a musicologist and doesn't think overmuch about composers. He teaches American studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, and traces his ethnographic approach to music scholarship to the Music in Daily Life Project overseen by the seminal popular music scholar Charles Keil at SUNY Buffalo. In 1993 Cavicchi, Keil, and Susan D. Crafts published My Music: 41 interviews with everyday fans that explode the fantasy of exclusive "taste subcultures" so dear to sociologists and marketers (and critics too) just by recounting musical preferences that cross more genre boundaries than experts consider appropriate. In 1998, he turned his Brown Ph.D. thesis into Tramps Like Us: Music & Meaning Among Springsteen Fans, dominated by summaries of and longish quotes from about 100 Bruce devotees that focus on feelings and experiences while barely touching the music itself ? even though Cavicchi's candid passion for that music helps ground and humanize the material.
As a critic, I have reservations about a method Cavicchi never suggests is the only way to address music. But as a democrat I welcome it. "My Music"
changed the way I think about fandom and established Cavicchi's right to write music history his way. The result is Listening and Longing: Music Lovers in the Age of Barnum, a detailed look at 19th-century music consumers that at a mere 192 pages stands as a painstaking, groundbreaking work of scholarship that adds substantially to our understanding of all that disrespected action. Cavicchi's approach propels him well beyond music proper. He believes that in the context of such "cultures of hearing" as oratory and hucksterism, "music lovers," as he likes to call them, were key players in the 19th century's fundamental identity-building project. As country boys tried their luck in the city and young middle-class women edged away from hearth and home, they developed their own ideas about pleasure, leisure, and class. Transformed inexorably into atomized cultural and economic actors, they struggled to make the most of it and enjoyed themselves along the way.

WASHINGTON?? Metal hip replacements implanted in a half-million Americans may be failing earlier than expected, but it could be years before U.S. health regulators have a clear picture of the scope of the problem.
Don't miss these Health stories
After a school sunscreen ban left two elementary students severely burned, their mother is taking on the school district. And it could happen elsewhere: 49 states have laws on the books barring schools from letting kids use sunscreen without a doctor's note.
The Food and Drug Administration holds a two-day meeting starting Wednesday to scrutinize the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants, following years of patient reports of pain and swelling that sometimes requires removal of the devices. It is a challenging, but familiar, predicament for the FDA: reviewing the safety of a device that was expected to be superior, but which may actually be more dangerous than what came before.
For decades nearly all orthopedic implants were made from plastic or ceramic. But in the last 10 years some surgeons began to favor implants made with metal stems and sockets. Laboratory tests suggested the devices would be more resistant to wear and reduce the chances of dislocation.
But recent data gathered by surgeons in the U.K. appears to show just the opposite.
In March, British experts at the world's largest artificial joint registry told doctors to stop using metal-on-metal hip replacements, citing an analysis showing they have to be replaced more often than other implants. Hip replacements are supposed to last between 10 to 15 years, but more than 6 percent of patients with metal hips needed them replaced after less than five years. That compared with just 2 percent of people who had ceramic or plastic joints. Both types of devices are prescribed for people suffering hip pain and limited movement due to arthritis or injury.
British regulators now recommend that people who have the implants get yearly blood tests to make sure no dangerous metals are seeping into their bodies as the components rub against each other.
U.S. regulators have not made any similar recommendations for the estimated 500,000 American patients who have received the devices.
FDA scientists say they want to consider all available information before making their recommendations ? not just the data from the U.K.
"Why look at a single registry when there's data from around the world?" said Dr. William Maisel, FDA's chief scientist for medical devices, in an interview with the Associated Press. "This is an opportunity for us to look at all the available information so that we can have a thoughtful conversation about what clinical recommendations can be made."
Maisel said the FDA is working to combine data from foreign countries and the U.S. to determine which groups of patients and implants are most problematic. On Wednesday and Thursday the FDA will ask a panel of experts to recommend the best practices for monitoring patients with the devices. Panelists will consider blood tests, medical imaging and laboratory tests.
But some U.S. orthopedic specialists say they have already reached their own conclusions about metal hips.
"In my personal opinion there is very little room, if any, for metal-on-metal implants because the alternatives we have on the market are likely safer and as effective," said Dr. Art Sedrakyan, professor of public health at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
The FDA's deliberative approach to tackling the hip implant issue is in some ways a necessity. Unlike other countries, the U.S. has no national registry to track the performance of implants over time.
The FDA has received 16,800 event reports about metal hips between 2000 and 2011, but regulators stress that number is not very useful. Many doctors do not report problems to the FDA, and the volume of reports is influenced by news reports on safety issues.
A registry set up by Minnesota's HealthEast Care System recorded four times as many replacement surgeries for patients with metal-on-metal hips as those with other implant types. However, a similar registry set up by health care provider Kaiser Permanente found no difference between the two groups.
With little definitive data on U.S. hip implants, the agency has asked manufacturers like Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer Holdings Inc. and Biomet Inc. to conduct long-term, follow-up studies of more than 100 metal-on-metal hips on the U.S. market.
FDA scientists say the studies will help "fill in the blanks" on a number of scientific questions, including the effects of metal particles that often seep into the bloodstream as the implants wear down.
But Sedrakyan and others say it could be a decade or more before that information is available. In a commentary published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, Sedrakyan and two co-authors pointed out those studies must run at least eight years to return the information FDA is seeking. Based on the authors' analysis of FDA records, the FDA has reached agreements on the design of less than 25 percent of the studies, and it's unclear whether any of the studies have actually begun. The FDA notified the companies last May.
The prospect of safety findings arriving in eight or 10 years is little comfort to patients like Mary Weaver, 48, who had both hips replaced with a metal implant from Johnson & Johnson in 2007 and 2008. J&J recalled the ASR hip replacement in 2010, after reports that it was failing in some patients after only a few years after implantation.
Due to increasing pain and elevated metal levels in her blood, Weaver had both implants removed in 2011. She was let go from her job due to the time needed to undergo both surgeries, and is currently unemployed.
"I hope that no one has to go through this ? it's frustrating, it's emotionally draining," said Weaver, who lives in Mt. Jackson, Va. "It's not just hard on you, it's hard on your whole family because your quality of life is not what it used to be."
Like 90 percent of medical devices sold in the U.S., most metal-on-metal hips were approved via the FDA's fast track program for medical devices. Under the so-called 510k system, the agency waives clinical testing requirements for devices which appear similar to others already in use. Since plastic and ceramic hip replacements had been on the market since the 1950s, most metal hip replacements were approved without new clinical testing.
"I am so furious they would use my wife as a lab rat, along with the other 500,000 people who don't have a clue what is happening," said Dwight Schrag, 69, of Bellevue, Wash. Schrag's wife Mary received J&J's ASR hip in 2006 and had it removed due to pain and other side effects in 2010. Schrag is one of a number of public speakers who have signed up to speak at the FDA meeting.
It's not the first time the FDA's fast-track program for clearing devices has come under fire.
Last summer the Institute of Medicine said in a report that the FDA should abandon the 35-year-old system because it provides little assurance that the implants are actually safe. The Institute is composed of medical experts who advise the federal government.
Although the FDA itself requested the report from the Institute, agency officials rejected the group's conclusions, saying the 510k system works well for the vast majority of devices.

Jennifer Lawrence Assisting A Fainting Woman Outside Her L.A. Apartment Complex

Jennifer Lawrence doesn't just rush to action on the big screen. The "Hunger Games" starlet was walking her dog outside her L.A. apartment complex Monday when she stumbled upon a young woman lying on her back on the lawn. According to X17, Lawrence raced over to help the young woman while someone nearby called the paramedics.
A photographer on the scene told the photo agency, "Jennifer ran outside her apartment when she heard a girl scream and immediately called 911. When the EMT arrived, she stayed to make sure everything was OK. She was really scared for the girl."
The Santa Monica Police Department told TMZ, "The young lady who collapsed was a juvenile and was part of a group that was together," adding that "alcohol may have played a role in the incident."
Lawrence, sporting a casual look in gray sweatpants and a black tank top, got on the ground to assist the woman and stayed by her side until paramedics arrived. It's unclear why the woman was in front of Lawrence's property, but paramedics treated the unidentified woman on the scene, and she was then cleared to leave.
Lawrence isn't the only celebrity who has played superhero recently: Patrick Dempsey came to the rescue a little less than two months ago, saving a teenager who crashed his car outside the "Grey's Anatomy" star's house.
Lawrence is gearing up to reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen in the "Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire," slated to hit theaters in November 2013.
