Off to the future with a new soccer robot

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Computer scientists from the University of Bonn have developed a new robot whose source code and design plan is publicly accessible. It is intended to facilitate the entry into research on humanoids, in particular, the TeenSize Class of the RoboCup. The scientists recently introduced the new robot at the IROS Conference (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) in Portugal.

With its white head and black body, "NimbRo-OP" looks almost human. After all, at a height of 95 centimeters, it is almost the size of a small child. Among soccer robots, it counts as a "grown-up." Thanks to light-weight materials, its weight of 6.6 kilograms is, however, clearly less than that of a child. It has a total of 20 drive elements that convert computer commands into mechanical motions. This is also why "NimbRo-OP" is very agile -- it has no problems kicking a soccer ball, and it can also get up from a prone position like a human, for soccer players also sometimes fall down.

The robot's source code and design are open source

"We have made very effort to keep the design simple to allow other working groups to also use this robot as a basis for their work, modify and repair it," says Prof. Dr. Sven Behnke, lead of the Autonomous Intelli?gent Systems working group from the University of Bonn. Source code and design plan of "NimbRo-OP" are open source. This is intended to facilitate entry into research on humanoids, in particular, the TeenSize Class of the RoboCup.

The Bonn researchers used different humanoid robots as the inspiration for their project. "There are also other very interesting robots; but they are clearly smaller than ours," says Prof. Behnke. "But its size is essential for being able to do certain things, such as in robo-soccer." In addition, "NimbRo-OP" has a special wide-angle camera to get a view of the soccer field, and high processing capacity for swift response.

"NimbRo-OP" to participate in RoboCup

This robot, which was recently presented at the IROS Conference (International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems) in Portugal, is a prototype. "NimbRo-OP is not suitable for consumers," says Prof. Behnke. "Our target group consists of scientists who want to program robots based on this hard- and software." The scientists from the Uni?versity of Bonn also want to enter their robot in the RoboCup.

This is a first step in the development project. "With this platform, we would like to achieve compatibility with other robots," says the computer scientist. Over the next three years, the development project will be continued together with igus GmbH K?ln, an application partner, within a knowledge transfer project entitled "A humanoid TeenSize open-platform soccer robot." Prof. Behnke explains, "The goal of the project is accelerating progress in the humanoid robot area by intensifying the sharing with other groups of researchers."

Robots' soccer skills still inferior to those of humans

Chess computers have already proven that they can best human capabilities. "But humans are still clearly better at soccer than robots," the computer scientist from the University of Bonn reports. The requirements for soccer robots are high; they have to perceive environ?mental conditions via cameras and inclination sensors, detect the goal posts, opponents and obstacles, and make and implement decisions in?volving their team members. "There is still much to do to solve all the problems out on the pitch," adds Prof. Behnke.

Robo-soccer as a testing grounds for future everyday applications

The scientists are using the RoboCup to experiment with complex challenges for bipedal robots that can potentially be used in many practically relevant environments beyond soccer. "For example, they are capable of using tools, climbing stairs, and passing bottlenecks that are too narrow for wheeled or tracked robots," explains Prof. Behnke. In addition, they can also use human facial expressions, gestures and body language for communicating.

He adds, "Our goal is to stop re-inventing the wheel over and over; by using an open platform together with other researchers, we want to find solutions while saving on effort and expenses." The working group around Prof. Behnke is the most successful humanoid team worldwide at the RoboCup, and with wins in eleven individual competitions, quite likely even the most successful RoboCup team overall.

Obama cancels Florida event, returns to Washington to monitor storm

Orlando, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama canceled a campaign event in Florida on Monday to return to Washington ahead of Hurricane Sandy, a White House spokesman said.

"Due to deteriorating weather conditions in the Washington area, the president will not attend today's campaign event in Orlando," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

"The president will return to the White House to monitor the preparations for and early response to Hurricane Sandy," he said.

Sandy, a massive storm bearing down on the U.S. East Coast, has forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands residents.

Obama arrived in Florida on Sunday night, coming a day early to try to beat the storm. He was to have held a joint campaign event with former President Bill Clinton.

Clinton, who has been a popular surrogate for Obama, will still attend the rally.

Obama was to have returned to Washington around 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) on Monday, but safety concerns appear to have hampered that plan. He now will return around mid-morning.

The president delivered pizzas to a local campaign office in Florida on Sunday night and told volunteers that the burden would increase for them because he would have to curtail his campaign activities in the coming days.

Florida is a critical battleground state in the November 6 election. Obama has also canceled events in the swing states of Virginia and Colorado because of the storm.

Despite the drawback of canceling events roughly a week before Election Day, the storm gives Obama an opportunity to appear presidential in the middle of a natural disaster.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has also canceled campaign events as a result of the storm.

2013 Michelin Guide, San Francisco & Wine Country EditionEleven North Bay restaurants received the industry?s highest rating? the Michelin star ? with two Napa Valley restaurants maintaining a three-star rating and nine others earning the one-star rating.

The only two places that achieved three Michelin stars in 2012 for the San Francisco region were Thomas Keller?s The French Laundry in Yountville and Christopher Kostow?s The Restaurant at Meadowood Napa Valley in St. Helena, according to the Michelin Guide on travel, diving and lifestyle (michelinguide.com). They maintained their rating from last year.

A three-star ranking is described as ?the utmost international recognition in the culinary world.?

Thirty-four restaurants throughout the Bay Area earned one star, a culinary accomplishment the guide defines as ?a very good restaurant in its category.? Of those winners, six are in Napa County and three in Sonoma County:

  • Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford

Disney Performing Arts OnStage

The OnStage program gives students the opportunity to perform live in front of international audiences at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Many park guests are familiar with seeing a high school band march down Main Street at the Magic Kingdom. Middle and high school instrumental, vocal, and dance groups are eligible to audition for such an opportunity with Disney entertainment. Selected groups participate in their ?on stage? performance while learning about the Disney standard for performance excellence. While there, students also have the opportunity to participate in exclusive workshops where they can build confidence, camaraderie, and fine-tune their skills with entertainment professionals.

Workshops for the Arts

Performers looking to advance their skills and build upon their understanding of performance arts can learn from Disney professionals through a series of workshops designed by entertainment experts and taught by Disney cast members. The workshops focus on a variety of topics and include classes such as:

  • Performance Lab
  • Puppet Lab
  • Master Class: Percussion
  • Soundtrack Session: Instrumental
  • Improvisational Acting
  • Soundtrack Session: Vocal

The workshops are offered for a variety of levels beginning with younger performers aged seven and up. Classes are offered in two and three hour formats to instrumental, choral, and dance ensembles, marching bands, theater groups, and auxiliary units. Students will have the chance to practice on Disney stages and other unique locations nearby. Costs vary depending upon the program and its offerings, but begin at $60 per person and can go as high as over $1,000 per group.

Workshop Highlights

I really am amazed at the wide variety of workshop topics that Disney offers through the Performing Arts program. One that struck me as a very unique experience is that of Disney Sings in which students record an excerpt from an animated Disney feature film?s soundtrack. While doing so, they are guided by a professional Disney vocalist who helps build confidence and skill. I also thought that the Puppet Lab was a great offering because it gives students experience working with Disney puppets and mastering techniques needed for live shows. Auditions & Careers: Acting simulates the life of a professional actor including an audition, rehearsal time, and performance of a scene from a Disney production.

Festivals & Competitions

In addition to providing training and opportunities to showcase talent, Disney Performing Arts also offers exciting festivals and competitions for performers. Students can compete during numerous events year around at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Festivals are judged by nationally recognized adjudicators or industry professionals. As a result, students receive valuable feedback that can help in future endeavors.

Festival Disney

One such event is Festival Disney, a bi-annual event held at Walt Disney World on select weekends from March through June. Austria probes gruesome fate of Nazi-era disabled

HALL, Austria (AP) ? Forensic crews scraping away dirt from the remains of the Nazi-era psychiatric patients were puzzled: The skeletal fingers were entwined in rosary beads. Why, the experts wondered, would the Nazis ? who considered these people less than human ? respect them enough to let them take their religious symbols to their graves?

It turns out they didn't.

A year after the first of 221 sets of remains were exhumed at a former Austrian hospital cemetery, investigators now believe the beads were likely nothing more than a cynical smokescreen, placed to mislead relatives attending the burials into thinking that the last stage of their loved ones' lives was as dignified as their funerals.

But skeletons don't lie. Forensic work shows that more than half of the victims had broken ribs and other bone fractures from blows likely dealt by hospital personnel. Many died from illnesses such as pneumonia, apparently caused by a combination of physical injuries, a lack of food and being immobilized for weeks at a time.

Neither do medical records, which show that medical personnel cursed their patients as "imbeciles," ''idiots" and "useless eaters."

Indeed, there is now little doubt that for many of the dead ? mentally and physically disabled people considered by the Nazis to be human garbage ? their final months were hell on Earth.

Nazi extermination of the mentally and physically deficient has been documented since the end of World War II. But information gathered from the hospital cemetery in Hall, an ancient Tyrolean town of narrow, cobble-stoned alleys, cozy inns and graceful church spires east of Innsbruck, has filled out the picture in chilling new ways.

Historians, anthropologists, physicians and archaeologists say the Hall project represents the first time that investigators can match hospital records with remains, allowing them to identify, for example, cases in which patients had broken ribs, noses and collarbones that were not listed in their medical histories, suggesting that the patients had been beaten by those responsible for their care.

Faced with the horrors of the findings, those involved in the probe struggle to maintain the detached attitude of an investigator.

"At first, I sat here and worked through these documents in a relatively dry manner from the point of view of a scientist," psychiatrist Christian Haring said. "But as you read on at some point, you suddenly find yourself in a world where the goose-bumps appear."

Anthropologist George McGlynn said more than half of the sets of remains have broken bones, many of them unexplained in the patients' medical records.

"Why is a stubbed toe talked about in three different (documents), but six rib fractures that cause terrible pain isn't even mentioned?" he asked.

While such injuries did not kill directly, they may often have led to death. Many of the patients are listed as dying of pneumonia, and McGlynn said the "scary conclusion" is that rib injuries combined with sedation and forced immobility ? patients are suspected to have been strapped to their beds for weeks at a time ? may have generated fatal incidences of the disease.

"Nobody is being executed here, like you see in concentration camps," he said. "It was done in a more sinister, insidious way ? people are loaded up with drugs until they get a lung infection."

Forensic examination of the bones shows infection that started at the skin level then "goes right into the muscle and all the way to the bone," McGlynn said.

Others apparently starved ? if not to death, then to the point where they were susceptible to diseases that then killed them.

"We can assume that the patients suffered massively from hunger," said Haring, the psychiatrist, speaking of "enormous" losses in weight.

The Nazis called people deemed too sick, weak or disabled to fit Hitler's image of a master race "unworthy lives," in the terrible culmination of the cult of eugenics that gained international popularity in the early 1900s as a way to improve the "racial quality" of future generations.

"Patients, who on the basis of human judgment are considered incurable, can be granted mercy death after a discerning diagnosis," Hitler wrote in a 1939 decree that opened the flood gates to the mass killings.

More than 70,000 such people were killed, gassed to death or otherwise murdered between 1939 and 1941, when public protests stopped most wholesale massacres. From then until the end of the war in 1945, the killings continued at the hands of doctors and nurses. In all, at least 200,000 physically or mentally disabled people were killed by medication, starvation, neglect or in the gas chambers during the war.

After 1941, McGlynn said, "a lot of the smaller institutions were given carte blanche to take care of things themselves. No longer were people being transported to (killing) centers. They were being put to sleep right there."

Hundreds of psychiatric patients from Hall were among those shipped to killing centers before 1941, but what happened there after that was unknown until two years ago, when an archivist searching through old hospital files discovered the graveyard during a hospital expansion.

The records show that as the war progressed, and able-bodied men and women became scarce behind the front lines, the Nazis made a cynical adjustment in their measurement of patients' value.

"'Worthy of life' and 'unworthy of life' were the terms used back then," Haring said. "The difference was ability to work or not."

Excerpts of medical histories provided to The Associated Press described one of the patients as suffering from "imbecility," but most were objective, bereft of demeaning descriptions. McGlynn, however, said he had examined records that show emotional abuse in addition to the physical violence the remains attest to.

"People are being threatened: 'If you don't do this we are going to stuff this tube down your nose and pump you full of stuff,'" he said. "These people were at the mercy of their captors."

Other evidence backs up his findings.

Documents show that the cemetery was created in 1942, a year after the formal end of the mass-killing campaign meant that Hall patients could no longer be shipped to gas chambers. It was shut down and abandoned in 1945, when the war ended. During that time, deaths in the psychiatric ward rose from an average of 4 percent a month in early 1942 to as high as 20 percent in some months before the end of the war.

Haring, an affable, soft-spoken man, is visibly shaken as he speaks of the horrors perpetrated by the previous generation of psychiatrists. But he hesitates to assign individual guilt to anyone caught up in the inhuman machinery of the Third Reich.

"It is easy for us now to point the finger and say 'what have they done?'" he said. "But ... I am not sure that I would have acted differently. We were simply paralyzed."

TORONTO (AP) -Stephen Hart has resigned as Canada soccer coach, two days after the team was eliminated from World Cup qualifying with an 8-1 loss at Honduras.

Canadian Soccer Association president Victor Montagliani announced Thursday that Hart had quit.

Canada needed a tie or win to advance to next year's six-nation finals in North and Central America and the Caribbean. The seven-goal loss was its largest margin since an 8-0 defeat at Mexico in 1993.

Hart was hired in December 2009. Including an interim stint in 2006-07, he managed Canada to a 20-15-10 record.

(AP) ? The NHL wiped out the third week of the regular season Friday as the lockout dragged on, leaving no more wiggle room if the league hopes to play a full 82-game schedule.

A day after the NHL turned down three counterproposals from players, the league canceled 53 more games. A total of 135 games through Nov. 1 have been scratched, which amounts to 11 percent of the season.

"As expected," New York Rangers goalie Martin Biron told The Associated Press in a text message. "We continue to work hard to find an agreement and get back to playing hockey."

In its third lockout since 1994, the NHL is sticking to its most recent proposal that stated a full 82-game-per-team schedule could be played if the season begins by Nov. 2. The league says a deal must be reached with the union by next Thursday for that to happen.

Two weeks ago, the league called off 82 games from Oct. 11-24.

On Thursday, the union rejected the NHL's proposal made two days earlier that offered a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues and ensured a full regular-season schedule. In brief talks, the players countered with their trio of offers that were, in turn, quickly dismissed by the league.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said he was "thoroughly disappointed" as he and the league delegation left union headquarters in Toronto. Bettman said that the owners' proposal was the "best that we could do" and added that the sides are still far apart.

"None of the three variations of player share that they gave us even began to approach 50-50, either at all or for some long period of time," Bettman said Thursday. "It's clear we're not speaking the same language."

No new talks are scheduled.

If next Thursday's deadline passes, more games will likely be cut, and the New Year's Day Winter Classic will be the next big event in danger of being lost. The Detroit Red Wings are slated to host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the outdoor extravaganza at Michigan Stadium.

Union executive director Donald Fehr said two of the union's proposals would have the players take a fixed amount of revenue, which would turn into an approximate 50-50 split over the term of the deal, provided league revenues continued to grow.

The third approach would be a 50-50 split, as long as the league honored all existing contracts at full value.

None of it made any positive impression on the NHL.

"This is not a good day," Fehr said Thursday. "It should have been."

Analysis: "You're fired" - or maybe not, South Africa's mines say

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - According to his "final ultimatum" to wildcat strikers, Gold Fields chief executive Nick Holland is hours away from firing 23,000 miners.

In the poisonous atmosphere of the worst industrial unrest in South Africa since the end of apartheid, everything points to him making good on his threat on Thursday, adding to the 15,000 men already sacked by platinum mines in the last two weeks.

The numbers are dramatic, and have political implications for President Jacob Zuma and his African National Congress (ANC), since each miner probably supports up to 10 dependents.

The reality, however, is that the mass dismissals are just another tactic - albeit a hard-ball one - in the long standoff between management and workers over pay and conditions. When a deal is finally reached, most will get their jobs back.

Re-hiring thousands of miners may be a logistical nightmare for the likes of Gold Fields, the world's fourth largest bullion producer, but the bosses know - as do the workers - that the company has few other options if it is to restart production.

"It's very common that the employer uses mass dismissal as a way of changing the nature of the dispute," said one labour lawyer. He asked not to be named because he is involved in talks to resolve the strikes, which have hit growth and confidence in Africa's biggest economy.

"It's largely a tactical move," he said. "They don't expect to be able to run a mine with a completely new labour force."

AngloGold Ashanti, the world's No. 3 bullion producer, said on Wednesday it would decide next week whether to follow Gold Fields in its dismissal ultimatum, which falls due at 2 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Thursday.

Despite the fighting talk from chief executive Mark Cutifani in an interview with Reuters in London, the mood among strikers at AngloGold's mine in Carletonville, 40 km (25 miles) west of Johannesburg, was one of defiance and disdain.

"Come on, fire us," one man, among a group of hundreds of strikers on a hill near the mine, told Reuters Television as his friends joked and capered around him, pulling 10 rand notes from their wallets to wave at the camera.

"What are you going to do then?" he asked. "We know you're going to have to rehire us in two weeks."

WORST SINCE 1987

The strikes that erupted in early August at platinum miner Lonmin have pushed South African labour relations to their lowest ebb since a mass uprising in 1987 that successfully brought the white-controlled economy to its knees.

Some of the blame can be traced back to the police killing of 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana mine on August 16, the worst security incident since apartheid ended in 1994 - and to the hefty pay hike that eventually got miners back on the job.

However, it is also a consequence of the stress under which much of the industry, in particular platinum, finds itself, as well as grassroots disillusionment with the sluggish pace of economic change under nearly two decades of ANC rule.

The unrest first flared in January, with a six-week walkout at Impala Platinum, the world's No. 2 producer of the precious metal, as a result of a turf war between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

NUM, whose close relationship with the ANC was forged in decades of struggle against white rule, was accused of being out of touch with workers and enjoying too cosy a relationship with management and the government.

Revelations that NUM leader Frans Baleni earns more than 1 million rand ($116,000) a year only reinforced the point, and helped fuel walkouts at Gold Fields by workers fed up primarily with NUM shop stewards they saw as self-serving.

Zuma made a point this week of standing shoulder to shoulder with its old friend in a bid to restore the NUM-led "collective bargaining" that has ensured relative labour stability in the mines over the last two decades.

But this misses the point that NUM are part of the problem, and may not necessarily part of the solution.

"The NUM can't come to us. They say they are scared of us," said Evans Ramokga, a representative for striking workers at an Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) mine near Rustenburg, 120 km (70 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

"RESTRUCTURING"

Amplats announced the dismissal of 12,000 strikers on October 5, causing a sharp fall in the rand due to fears it would inflame unrest in which more than 50 people have been killed, including several NUM officials shot or hacked to death.

But Ramokga - as with his gold mining colleagues - appears unperturbed, secure in the knowledge that the world's largest platinum producer will eventually have to come

"We're waiting patiently," he told Reuters. "That's why you don't see us going to the management. We're just waiting for them."

His confidence might be misplaced.

Analysts believe half of South Africa's platinum mines are making a loss because of a fall in the price of the metal this year, and Amplats parent company Anglo American has already placed its four Rustenburg mines "under review" - management-speak for working out whether to close them.

Gold Fields' Holland has also said that "restructuring" - again, managerial shorthand for closing shafts and laying off miners - "may become inevitable" as labour costs rise and South Africa's gold mines head ever deeper underground.

The lessons from Impala are telling: having fired 17,200 miners in the depths of its January dispute, the company rehired only 15,000 when it restarted operations in March.

"Unquestionably, when it comes to re-hiring, there will be fewer jobs," the labour expert said. "And this will be one of the points of negotiation." ($1 = 8.6100 South African rand) (Additional reporting by Dinky Mkhize and Sarah Young; Editing by Alastair Macdonald)

Helping Teens Cope With Depression - Narragansett - South ...

As we begin to prepare for the holiday season, our busy lives will be kicked up a notch and we?ll pour ourselves into traditions like creating hearty turkey dinners with all the trimmings, turning our cozy homes into holiday wonderlands, and above all gathering with family and loved ones to celebrate this special time of year.?

With so much excitement and happiness swirling about, it can be difficult to imagine that while you and your teenager spend a Saturday lunching and shopping for gifts together, a girl in her class might still be in bed sleeping at 3 p.m. because she doesn?t have any desire to get up and face the day.

Sadly, according to statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this girl represents nearly one in five teenagers that struggle with teenage depression.? It is quite common for young adults to experience stress, anger, confusion, and depression from situations occurring in their friendships, families, schools, or communities.

The most common symptoms of teenage stress are irritability, headache, nausea, fatigue, increased heart rate and a pessimistic outlook. Sociologists blame the increase in teenage stress on high divorce rates (nearly 10 percent of families with children under 18 compared to 7.5 percent 20 years ago) and lack of community involvement. There is also the Internet with its bombardment of information and temptations.

Our Gansett Moms? Council has faced these serious issues with some of our own teens, so we reached out to some local professionals who work with depressed teens on a regular basis for their insight and suggestions.

Narragansett resident Leigh A. Reposa, LCSW, program manager for the RI Youth Suicide Prevention Program at Rhode Island Student Assistance Services, and Jessica Wolke, LICSW, Rhode Island Student Assistance Services and Student Assistance Counselor at North Kingstown High School, are both heavily involved with local youth and are experienced in dealing with the rising challenge of teen depression and the horrific consequences it has on their lives and that of their families.??

Often families face either shame or the angst of just not knowing how to help their teen cope when depression strikes. Reposa and Wolke believe in open communication and sharing as much information about this topic as possible, so the two collaborated during a recent interview in hopes of helping families have a better understanding of what teens today are facing.?

Cheryl:?Today's teens have a lot on their plates. ?They are overwhelmed with day-to-day circumstances such as keeping up with schoolwork, sports, finding time for friends and wanting to be accepted by their peers. It seems like more and more young adults are facing bouts of depression. How do we as parents and adults in the community know that it's more than just the pressure of school?

Reposa:? As parents and care takers you know your child best. If you notice things like:

significant mood changes (sad and withdrawn, low energy, etc for more than a week to two weeks), isolating behavior, your child starts to lose interest in regular activities, they are over sleeping, under sleeping, have changes in appetite, or if you know or hear about your child using substances, these are all warning signs and should be taken seriously.

Often times it?s easy to dismiss concerns as normal adolescent development, but if a behavior is not normal for your child or continues for more than a couple of weeks, it?s time to get your child connected to someone who can help.?

Cheryl: What are some effective strategies for helping teens who are just not handling "life" well and seem to really be struggling??

Reposa: Take your child?s concerns seriously. Acknowledge how they are feeling and validate, validate, validate. I tell parents to try not to use ?bumper sticker advice.? If you say things like ?oh it?s just a phase, you?ll get through it? to the child, even if it?s not the intent, this can be interpreted as not validating the emotional pain the child might be feeling. It closes down any opportunity for discussion about what is causing these intense feelings.

Trust your gut. ?Let your child know you are concerned about them and ask them what?s going on.? The child might be fine and just having a bad couple days. The message you are giving your child is that you are paying attention, and that they matter.? Be supportive which could mean anything from listening without interrupting (which can be hard but practice) to connecting your child with counseling services in your community. ?

Sometimes having an unrelated outside person to talk to can be helpful for a child. ?A counselor can help validate what the child is going through and can act as a non judgmental member of the child?s helping team.?

Cheryl:?Are kids more apt to keep these difficult feelings to themselves or share with their friends??

Reposa:? It depends on the child, but in my experience, kids who feel that they have close friends they can confide in, will share with them first. It might be sharing through text conversations, Facebook messaging or posting, through tweets, or on their Tumblr pages.

If a child does not feel connected with their peers, they might share how they are feeling with a sibling, or a family member they feel they can trust who will not judge them.?

Cheryl: If they do share with their friends, if it seems to be a situation that could be very unhealthy, should the friends speak up and share with their parents or perhaps a counselor??

Reposa:? Yes! Yes! Yes! Some secrets must be shared. A friend should tell an adult as soon as possible if they are concerned about a friend who might be depressed or suicidal. If the friend shares their feelings in a text or on social media, the friend should show the text to the adult right away.

Friends should take all signs seriously. The sooner a friend is connected with someone that can help, the sooner the friend will feel better and have support to get them through what is causing the emotional pain.?

Cheryl: What can parents try and do to help their teens who seem to be battling depression??

Wolke:? Parents may need help themselves, which could mean educating themselves about depression or accessing their own support.? It?s also important that parents find out what resources are available in the community to help their child. By getting help parents are modeling help seeking behavior for their child, which also helps reduce stigma around what their child is going through.

It?s important that the more parents know about depression and other mood disorders the more they know about the treatments available to help support their child so that they can start to feel better. It?s okay to talk about depression and other mental health issues.?

Cheryl: Where can parents turn for help??

Reposa: In an emergency: If an attempt has been made call 911 or get to a local emergency room right away.

In the School: Student Assistance Counselor, School Psychologist, School Nurse, School Social Worker, Guidance Counselor, School Administrators?

In the community: Community mental health provider, pediatrician or family physician can often make a referral?

Cheryl: Where can teens turn for help??

Reposa: School Student Assistance Counselor, School Psychologist, School Nurse, School Social Worker, Guidance Counselor, School Administrators?

Here are some warning signs that families should be aware of that might indicate suicide is on their teen's mind.?

  • Threatening to kill themselves
  • Stockpiling pills or obtaining access to means
  • Talking to writing about death and recent preoccupation with death
  • Giving away prized possessions
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Feeling rage or uncontrolled anger
  • Acting reckless or engaging in risky activities
  • Feeling trapped-like there?s no way out
  • Increasing drug and alcohol use
  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Feeling anxious, agitated, or unable to sleep or sleeping all the time
  • Experiencing dramatic mood changes
  • Seeing no reason for living or having no sense of purpose in life?

Cheryl: Are certain teens at a higher risk than others?

Reposa: Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teens both in Rhode Island and Nationally. Having said that here are some things to consider if you are worried your teen might be at higher risk for:?

  • Recent significant loss: breakup, family member passing away, parent recently incarcerated, loss of health, family member being deployed, parents divorcing
  • Bullying or victimization
  • Single or Multiple stressors
  • History of sexual/physical abuse
  • History of neglect
  • History of trauma exposure/ongoing witness to violence
  • History of suicide in family
  • Substance use and abuse
  • Family history of mood disorders, or chronic mental health issues?

Cheryl: If there was one thing that you would want parents to know about teen depression and contemplation of suicide what would that be??

Reposa:? Take all signs seriously! (And trust your gut? I know that was two, sorry.)?

Wolke and Reposa acknowledged that kids often times don?t want to talk about their feelings and offer a helpful strategy by using a scale:?

For example: ?On a scale of 1 to 10 how bad is it today?? (Qualify your scale.)

One might mean it?s a great day, and a 10 might mean the child is in crisis. Often times if the child states a 5 or a 6, this can open up a conversation about what that number means to them in that moment.

Another strategy is the ?How are you feeling today?? posters or magnets. This allows your teen or child to merely point to the facial expression that is closest to how they are feeling.

I often validate with teens that they might wake up pointing to the ?Angry? face on the poster and by the afternoon they feel like pointing to the ?Happy? face and at night they might point to another face and that?s okay!

?It?s when they point to the same distressed faces for days at a time that we are concerned and want to start making a plan to get the child connected to additional supports either clinical or otherwise,? Reposa said.?

The two also recommend the following three things parents can do to keep their home safe:

  • Limit medications in the home
  • Talk to your child constantly both when things are going well and when they are having difficulties
  • Lock up firearms

One last thought and statistic to consider, though, that certainly proves your awareness can help is that eighty percent of teens who commit suicide try to seek help from someone shortly before committing the act, so staying in tune to your teen?s behaviors and feelings is extremely important.

?Adolescent substance abuse is not the social norm and the child could be in the early stages of addiction. ?Intervening and getting your child recovery supports early is critical,? Wolke said.

As we enter the holiday season this year, it?s the perfect time to put the focus on our young adult family members and keep the lines of communication open.? Staying connected as a family takes work, but once your kids see how much you are interested in their daily lives, they will be more apt to reach out to you in times of trouble because they know you have a genuine interest in their well being.?

Websites such as kidshealth.org and teendepression.org are helpful resources for both parents and teens.?

Planet found in nearest star system to Earth: HARPS instrument finds Earth-mass exoplanet orbiting Alpha Centauri B

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? European astronomers have discovered a planet with about the mass of Earth orbiting a star in the Alpha Centauri system -- the nearest to Earth. It is also the lightest exoplanet ever discovered around a star like the Sun. The planet was detected using the HARPS instrument on the 3.6-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile.

The results will appear online in the journal Nature on Oct. 17, 2012.

Alpha Centauri is one of the brightest stars in the southern skies and is the nearest stellar system to our Solar System -- only 4.3 light-years away. It is actually a triple star -- a system consisting of two stars similar to the Sun orbiting close to each other, designated Alpha Centauri A and B, and a more distant and faint red component known as Proxima Centauri [1]. Since the nineteenth century astronomers have speculated about planets orbiting these bodies, the closest possible abodes for life beyond the Solar System, but searches of increasing precision had revealed nothing. Until now.

"Our observations extended over more than four years using the HARPS instrument and have revealed a tiny, but real, signal from a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B every 3.2 days," says Xavier Dumusque (Geneva Observatory, Switzerland and Centro de Astrofisica da Universidade do Porto, Portugal), lead author of the paper. "It's an extraordinary discovery and it has pushed our technique to the limit!"

The European team detected the planet by picking up the tiny wobbles in the motion of the star Alpha Centauri B created by the gravitational pull of the orbiting planet [2]. The effect is minute -- it causes the star to move back and forth by no more than 51 centimetres per second (1.8 km/hour), about the speed of a baby crawling. This is the highest precision ever achieved using this method.

Alpha Centauri B is very similar to the Sun but slightly smaller and less bright. The newly discovered planet, with a mass of a little more than that of Earth [3], is orbiting about six million kilometres away from the star, much closer than Mercury is to the Sun in the Solar System. The orbit of the other bright component of the double star, Alpha Centauri A, keeps it hundreds of times further away, but it would still be a very brilliant object in the planet's skies.

The first exoplanet around a Sun-like star was found by the same team back in 1995 and since then there have been more than 800 confirmed discoveries, but most are much bigger than Earth, and many are as big as Jupiter [4]. The challenge astronomers now face is to detect and characterise a planet of mass comparable to Earth that is orbiting in the habitable zone [5] around another star. The first step has now been taken [6].

"This is the first planet with a mass similar to Earth ever found around a star like the Sun. Its orbit is very close to its star and it must be much too hot for life as we know it," adds St?phane Udry (Geneva Observatory), a co-author of the paper and member of the team, "but it may well be just one planet in a system of several. Our other HARPS results, and new findings from Kepler, both show clearly that the majority of low-mass planets are found in such systems."

"This result represents a major step towards the detection of a twin Earth in the immediate vicinity of the Sun. We live in exciting times!" concludes Xavier Dumusque.

Notes

[1] The components of a multiple star are named by adding uppercase letters to the name of the star. Alpha Centauri A is the brightest component, Alpha Centauri B is the slightly fainter second star and Alpha Centauri C is the much fainter Proxima Centauri. Proxima Centauri is slightly closer to Earth than A or B and hence is formally the closest star.

[2] HARPS measures the radial velocity of a star -- its speed towards or away from Earth -- with extraordinary precision. A planet in orbit around a star causes the star to regularly move towards and away from a distant observer on Earth. Due to the Doppler effect, this radial velocity change induces a shift of the star's spectrum towards longer wavelengths as it moves away (called a redshift) and a blueshift (towards shorter wavelengths) as it approaches. This tiny shift of the star's spectrum can be measured with a high-precision spectrograph such as HARPS and used to infer the presence of a planet.

[3] Using the radial velocity method, astronomers can only estimate a minimum mass for a planet as the mass estimate also depends on the tilt of the orbital plane relative to the line of sight, which is unknown. But, from a statistical point of view, this minimum mass is often close to the real mass of the planet.

[4] NASA's Kepler mission has found 2300 candidate planets using an alternative method -- searching for the slight drop in the brightness of a star as a planet passes in front of it (transits) and blocks some of the light. The majority of planet candidates detected by this transit method are very distant from us. But, in contrast, the planets found by HARPS are around stars close to the Sun -- with the new discovery being the closest yet. This makes them better targets for many kinds of additional follow-up observations such as characterising the planet's atmosphere.

[5] The habitable zone is a narrow annular region around a star in which water may be present in liquid form if conditions are right.

[6] ESPRESSO, the Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanet and Stable Spectroscopic Observations, is to be installed on the ESO Very Large Telescope. Currently undergoing final design, it is scheduled to start operating in late-2016 or early-2017. ESPRESSO will feature radial velocity precision of 0.35 km/hour or less. For comparison, Earth induces a 0.32 km/hour radial velocity on the Sun. This resolution should thus enable ESPRESSO to discover Earth-mass planets in the habitable zone. The ESPRESSO consortium is led by team members responsible for the current discovery.

Attack! Silent watchmen charge to defend the nervous system

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? In many pathologies of the nervous system, there is a common event -- cells called microglia are activated from surveillant watchmen into fighters. Microglia are the immune cells of the nervous system, ingesting and destroying pathogens and damaged nerve cells. Until now little was known about the molecular mechanisms of microglia activation despite this being a critical process in the body. Now new research from the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital -- The Neuro -- at McGill University provides the first evidence that mechanisms regulated by the Runx1 gene control the balance between the surveillant versus activated microglia states.

The finding, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, has significant implications for understanding and treating neurological conditions.

As surveillant watchmen, microglial cells wait for something bad to happen in the nervous system. They have a small cell body and long branches that monitor the local environment. As soon as there are signs of injury or disease, microglia are activated into fighters. The branches retract and the microglia morph into a large rounded body in order to attack and ingest pathogens: bacteria, viruses, and diseased or injured nerve cells (for example in head trauma). If microglia activation is not precisely controlled, however, it can become harmful to the body as microglia can start to attack healthy cells. For example, after epileptic seizures, the brain responds by regenerating new nerve cells. The microglia help in this process of regeneration, but they can also negatively influence the survival of the new born nerve cells if their activation persists for too long. The research team at The Neuro therefore asked important questions: How can we learn how the process of activating microglia from watchmen to fighter is controlled? What can we do to ensure that the beneficial effects of microglia activation predominate over their potentially deleterious effects?

It turns out that the process of microglia activation in the adult brain is almost a recapitulation in reverse of mechanisms that occur during nervous system development. Microglia in the developing brain are already in an early form of fighter mode and have the capacity to eliminate cell debris and redundant nerve cell connections. Pruning of the nerve cell network is a normal process during development. Soon after birth microglia are gradually deactivated from early fighters to surveillant watchmen, a state that they will maintain until there is injury or trauma in the adult brain, which causes them to revert from watchmen back to fighters.

"So the approach we took was to study the normal process of microglia deactivation during brain development on the premise that understanding this process might also help us understand adult brain microglia activation in response to injury or disease," says Dr. Stefano Stifani, lead investigator and neuroscientist at The Neuro. "Our study provides evidence for a previously unrecognized role of a particular gene, termed Runx1, in promoting the transition of microglia from an early form of activated fighter to surveillant watchmen in the postnatal mouse brain. We show that Runx1 is expressed in these early fighter microglia during the first two postnatal weeks and that if Runx1 function in these cells is inhibited they tend to persist longer and their transition into watchmen microglia is delayed. We also looked at an experimental animal model in which an artificial injury causes surveillant microglia to be activated into fighters. This showed that Runx1 expression is induced in microglia when they become activated following injury in the adult mouse nervous system, suggesting that Runx1 might be important for controlling how long fighter microglia remain activated in the adult nervous system, as it does in the developing brain."

These findings improve our understanding of microglia biology in the developing and injured adult brain. Moreover, they have potential therapeutic implications for several neurological conditions -- further research could lead to the development of treatment strategies by pharmacologically targeting key modulators of microglia activation.
