Ash's late TD pass to Goodwin gives Texas thrilling win in Alamo Bowl

All week, the Texas Longhorns talked about the importance of finishing their up-and-down season on a high note.

After ending the regular season with two consecutive losses that dropped them to 8-4, Coach Mack Brown and his players knew a defeat in the Alamo Bowl would make for a long offseason.

When Brown suspended two players on Thursday for violating team rules, many wondered how the Longhorns would handle the distraction.

But UT responded to the challenge, rallying for a 31-27 victory against Oregon State in the 20th Alamo Bowl on Saturday night at the Alamodome.

The game-winning play came on a 36-yard pass from sophomore David Ash to senior wide receiver Marquise Goodwin with 2:24 left.

"They bit on the double moves and I just escaped them," Goodwin said. "I just escaped them."

A crowd of 65,277, the fourth largest in the history of the Alamo Bowl, watched one of the most exciting games of the bowl season.

"The guys believed tonight, believed in each other, believed in our preparation, and played as hard as they could," Ash said. "It was a lot of fun and I just couldn't be more thankful."

With the Longhorns down 20-10 at halftime and struggling to muster any momentum, Brown challenged his players to "make the move" toward setting a higher standard for the team.?

"They've got the momentum," Brown said, recounting what he told the Longhorns. "And for us to win this game, we're going to have to have everybody jump in and do their job, and do the best that they can possibly do. But this is what we need. We need a tough win against a top team to get back in the mix, so we can get confidence for all these guys coming back."

?

Goodwin, Okafor earn MVP honors

Given the adversity they faced this season, perhaps it was fitting that the Longhorns had to scratch and claw to avoid heading into the offseason with a three-game losing streak.

UT, which only three seasons ago played in the BCS title game, finished 9-4. The Longhorns were 8-5 last year after going 5-7 in 2010. They went 13-1 in 2009, with the only loss coming against Alabama in the BCS championship game.

Oregon State, which led 27-17 heading into the fourth quarter, also finished 9-4.

Goodwin was named the game's Offensive MVP and end Alex Okafor, who set an Alamo Bowl record with 4.5 sacks, garnered Defensive MVP honors.

Okafor, a senior, led a defense that set an Alamo Bowl record with 10 sacks.

"It's always great to end the season on a good note, and that's what we did tonight," Okafor said. "We're going to use this game as a stepping stone."

Ash's scoring strike to Goodwin came one play after Gray picked up three yards on a fourth-and-one. Ash came up big in the fourth quarter, completing 9 of 11 passes for 146 yards and two TDs.

A sophomore, Ash finished with 21 completions in 33 attempts for 214 yards and the two TDs. He was intercepted once.

Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Longhorns came to life after cornerback Quandre Diggs intercepted a pass by Cody Vaz at the OSU 49 and returned the pick three yards.

?

Goodwin also scored on 64-yard reverse

Nine plays later, Ash scored an 11-yard TD on a quarterback draw and Nick Jordan kicked the extra point to trim the Beavers' lead to 20-17 with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter.

UT's momentum continued to build when it forced a three-and-out on OSU's next possession, but disaster struck the Longhorns when linebacker Feti Unga intercepted an Ash pass at the UT 44.

Starting at the Longhorns' 42 after Unga's 2-yard return, the Beavers covered the distance in five plays. Storm Woods' 2-yard TD run around right end, combined with Trevor Romaine's conversion kick, put OSU ahead 27-17 with nine seconds left in the third quarter.

UT stormed back on its ensuing possession, mounting a nine-play, 83-drive that was capped by Ash's 15-yard scoring strike to Gray. Jordan's kick cut the deficit to 27-24 with 8:18 left.

A 64-yard TD on a reverse by Goodwin, and the conversion kick by Jordan on the first play of the second quarter tied the game 10-10.?

But OSU scored 10 unanswered points on its next two possessions to take a 20-10 lead at the half.

Romaine kicked a 29-yard field goal to put the Beavers ahead 13-10 Woods scored on a 9-yard run up the middle with 3:46 left in the second period.

?

Okafor set up field goal by causing fumble

Oregon State took a 3-0 lead on a 29-yard field goal by Romaine with 9:12 left in the first quarter.

Romaine's kick came five plays after defensive end Scott Crichton blocked a 46-yard field-goal attempt by Jordan. Unga returned the kick 14 yards before he pitched?the ball to?free safety Ryan Murphy, who went another 23 yards to the UT 37.?

Okafor?poked the ball out of Vaz's hand on the first play of the Beavers' next possession, causing a fumble that was recovered by defensive end Cedric Reed at the OSU 26.

After the Longhorns could get only three yards in three plays, Jordan booted a 40-yard field goal that tied the game 3-3 with 6:46 left in the opening quarter.

The Beavers?scored on their next possession, carving out a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Woods' 12-yard?run up the?middle with 1:33?remaining in the period.?Romaine's extra-point kick put OSU ahead 10-3.

But the Beavers lead was shortlived.

After an offsides penalty on a punt gave UT a first down at its 36 on the ensuing possession, Goodwin went left after taking the pitch on the reverse and sprinted down the sideline for the TD. His score capped a four-play, 75-yard drive.

"He played a great game tonight," Brown said of Goodwin. "We challenged all of our players to make sure that our seniors left happy and had a happy dressing room, and that's happening in there tonight."

Hasina reelected AL president, Ashraf general secretary

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was reelected president of the ruling Awami League (AL) unopposed Saturday for the seventh time, while LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam was made general secretary, reports UNB.

The councillors of the AL, one of the oldest political parties of the country, unanimously elected them in its 19th council on the day as there were no other candidates for the posts.

In her instant reaction after the reelection as the party president for the seventh successive term, Hasina said: "It's a big responsibility?I expected there would be new leadership and I would assist them staying beside them. That's why I had no preparation for this."

She went on: "But I gladly accept the responsibility you bestowed upon me as the election is ahead of us."

Hasina claimed the party is now more organised than in the past and said once there were many brackets after the name of the party in 1981 but now there is none.

In his reaction, Ashraful said, "We have to work together as in the past. And honesty and devotion will be our main strength in this connection."

Earlier, AL leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim proposed Hasina's name for the post of president, which was seconded by Ashraful. Party leader Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif proposed Ashraf's name while Jahangir Kabir Nanak seconded it.

Rahmat Ali, Mozammel Haque and Yusuf Hossain Humayun acted as election commissioners at the council.

Mexico City Wants to Become the Next Times Square

The plan is as big as this mammoth city: Turn a seedy metro hub into Mexico City's Times Square; clear swarms of feisty vendors and remodel the historic Alameda Central; illuminate the plazas and walkways of a park twice the size of New York's Central Park.

Mexico City's government is trying to transform one of the world's largest cities by beautifying public spaces, parks and monuments buried beneath a sea of honking cars, street hawkers, billboards and grime following decades of dizzying urban growth.

It's time to tame the city. Today is about giving the city back to pedestrians.

- Juan Carlos de Leo Gandara, head of the Iberoamerican University's sustainable urban projects

Despite the challenges, the ambitious, multimillion-dollar program carried out by former center-left Mayor Marcelo Ebrard and continued by his successor, Miguel Angel Mancera, is winning praise from urban planners and many residents. And it's turning the metropolis into an experiment in how to soften urban sprawl.

"It's time to tame the city," said Juan Carlos de Leo Gandara, head of the Iberoamerican University's sustainable urban projects. "Today is about giving the city back to pedestrians."

In the Alameda, made iconic in the Diego Rivera mural "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda," concrete sidewalks were replaced by marble, and makeshift vendor stands were kicked out ? a renovation that cost about $18.7 million. Instead of a motley patchwork of folding tables and tarps, the newly opened park, anchored by the art nouveau Palacio de Bellas Artes theater, is a sea of greenery and calm in the midst of racing traffic.

"It used to be very dark, with no lighting. It really wasn't a place to bring my son," said Alma Rosa Romero, a 32-year-old housewife standing by the new dancing-water fountains, holding her child's hand. "Now it's beautiful."

Other completed projects include a once-neglected plaza with an Arc de Triumph-style monument to Mexico's 1910 revolution, which has been remade at a cost of $28.6 million from a homeless encampment to an oasis where families frolic and children run through spurts of water gushing out of the pavement. The copper dome of what started out as the country's Congress building is newly polished and gleaming.

Downtown, at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of Tlaxcoaque, the city has installed multi-colored fountains that light up at night and replaced a parking lot with a larger plaza for pedestrians. The city has also converted Francisco I. Madero street in the historic center into a pedestrian walkway stretching to the Zocalo, the plaza that's home to the National Palace and massive Metropolitan Cathedral. And under a popular bridge near the hip neighborhood of Condesa, the city made way for a taco joint and a playground.

"A city where people go out to the streets is safe, happier and raises the quality of life," said Daniel Escotto, chief architect of Mexico City's Public Areas Office, which was founded in 2008 to manage urban renewal. "We are renovating floors, facades and adding plants and lighting and more elements that can shape this concept."

Yet in a city defined in many ways by its disorder, the plan is also being slammed by those who take pride in surviving the urban jungle.

"Yes it's safer, and it's renovated, but what happens to the emblem of Mexico City?" said Baltazar Romeo, 47, a hospital worker eating a sandwich at the newly remodeled Alameda. Gone were the street performers who once dressed as the Three Wise Men during Christmas and charged tips for photos with children. "The city is becoming soulless," Romeo said.

One of the flagship renovation projects is the once-seedy, swarming Glorieta de Insurgentes, a roundabout and metro station in central Mexico City that sees hundreds of thousands of commuters pour through every day.

The circular plaza was sunk to let pedestrians stream below busy thoroughfares and catch their trains or buses or just hang out. Around its rim careen cars in a roundabout that briefly merges two of the city's biggest thoroughfares, the mighty Insurgentes and Chapultepec avenues.

When the plaza was built in 1969, the city's top priority was moving an onslaught of cars and people from one point to another. Highways and beltways elsewhere went up to cope with the population boom, and sprawl spread farther out. Once-famous and safe streets and plazas suffered from neglect by planners and became slum-like neighborhoods people avoided after sunset. A brown haze covered the new skyline as motorists became the focus of the new infrastructure.

The Insurgentes roundabout turned into a place to hurry through. Homeless people took over abandoned warehouses nearby while surrounding office and apartment buildings fell into disrepair. Many of the plaza's shops became sleazy Internet cafes cowering beneath giant billboards.

"It couldn't be more hostile to public life or pedestrian life," said Ken Greenberg, a Toronto-based architect and urban designer who recently visited Mexico. "The whole thing just has a kind of very harsh feeling of a highway right in the middle of the city."

Urban designers are now seeking to infuse the chaos with the glitzy excitement of Times Square or London's Piccadilly Circus. Sixty-foot cylinders covered with circular screens streaming LED tickers have already been erected. The crabgrass-filled flower beds and low benches used as skateboard launches have been bulldozed for a sleek open-air look bathed in white, patterned concrete.

The makeover is meant to create a more appealing space for commuters using bikes and public transit in a city that won infamy as the world's most painful for commuters in a 2011 IBM survey.

"What Mexico City needs is to emphasize its identity through its public spaces," Escotto said.

The government says the Insurgentes project will also debut a new model for restricting advertising to designated spots. In 2010, local government banned advertisements on all public and private buildings, threatening a $9,000 fine for those who refused to comply. Two years later, however, the city is still blanketed by billboards.

Future projects include a cleanup of 67 bridges around the city and more lighting for plazas and walkways throughout Chapultepec Park, Mexico City's grand urban green space.

Some projects, including the Insurgentes roundabout, are being completed with the help of private funds. The roundabout renovation includes $4.5 million from 15 advertising companies that are erecting the giant LED screens. Critics worry the arrangement will benefit private companies more than city residents. Much of the beautification of the historic center was paid for by telecommunications billionaire Carlos Slim.

Some wonder whether Mancera, who is from Ebrard's party, will continue the effort and whether the city has the money to maintain its improvements. The question for this teeming city is whether its attempt to clean up will hold or whether the sprawl will ultimately prove more powerful.

"How is this work going to look in the next five months, or five years?" asked De Leo Gandara of the Iberoamerican University. "Will they preserve it? Will it still be clean? Are they keeping it together or is it forgotten again?"

This tactic will allow for an even give and take and will open the door for the person you are speaking with to share plenty of information about them and their business. Also, this will go a long way in making your follow-up and follow-thru easier. For example, when you send the person you?ve met a ?glad to meet you? follow-up note card a few days later, you can say, ?It was nice hearing about your expansion plans. Feel free to contact me if I can help in any way.?

6. Be a valuable resource to those you meet when moving around the room of an event.? Have a unique foreclosure cleanup business card, share unique stories, provide memorable give-a-ways, if appropriate, so individuals remember you and your foreclosure cleaning company.

8. Be clear about what you want to gain from the business outing. For example, do you want to circle the room and have meaningful contact with 10 new people so you can add them to your database of potential cleanup clients? Do you want to have conversations that will open the door to an in-person meeting beyond the event so you can discuss a mutually beneficial relationship? Have a goal in mind as you enter the doors of the event.

9. Follow up within a week or so with other small business owners you?ve met at the social/business event. ?You can give a quick call saying, ?It was really nice to meet you, let?s stay in touch.? Or, you can send a quick letter or note card thanking them for taking a moment to speak with you. After you?ve met a small business owner at an outing, your second ?touch? will be a warm one. Don?t miss an opportunity by NOT following up within a week or so after the event with a card or letter from our foreclosure clean-up company.

10. Have fun, be positive and relax.? You will enjoy the event and people will naturally gravitate to you and your foreclosure cleaning business.

Good luck networking to grow your business over the next several months.

India gang-rape victim 'struggling' to survive, hospital says

A young woman, one hand covered in fake blood, takes part in a protest Friday in Calcutta against the gang rape of a student who is now clinging to life.

By Reuters

SINGAPORE -- An Indian gang-rape victim whose assault in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests earlier this month has suffered "significant brain injury" and is surviving against the odds, the Singapore hospital treating her said on Friday.

The 23-year-old medical student, who was severely beaten, raped for almost an hour and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was airlifted to Singapore on Dec. 26 for specialist treatment.

Photos: Police try to temper outrage over gang rape

"The patient is currently struggling against the odds, and fighting for her life," Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

"Our medical team's investigations upon her arrival at the hospital yesterday showed that in addition to her prior cardiac arrest, she also had infection of her lungs and abdomen as well as significant brain injury."

The victim had already undergone three abdominal operations before arriving in Singapore, where her condition on Thursday was described as "extremely critical."

Demonstrations over the lack of safety for women erupted across India after the Dec. 16 attack on the unnamed victim, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of the capital.

Rape ignites outrage

Protesters call for execution

Should the woman die, it could trigger fresh outrage over the case, which caught Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government off guard and triggered a blame game between politicians and the police.

"We share the anguish and anger with the country over this heinous crime," Singh told reporters on Friday. "Our prayers are with the brave young girl and best possible medical care is being provided to her."

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Protests continued across New Delhi, India, where around 500 people marched in response to the recent gang rape of a young woman. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Myanmar to allow daily private newspapers

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Myanmar said Friday it will allow private daily newspapers starting in April for the first time since 1964, in the latest step toward allowing freedom of expression in the long-repressed nation.

The Information Ministry announced on its website that any Myanmar national wishing to publish a daily newspaper will be able to submit an application in February. New papers will be allowed to begin printing April 1 in any language.

The move was an expected part of new press freedoms President Thein Sein has introduced as part of wider democratic reforms since taking office last year, after a half-century of military rule.

In August, the government abolished direct censorship of the media and informed journalists they would no longer have to submit their work to state censors before publication as they had for almost half a century.

Myanmar has state-run dailies which serve as government mouthpieces and more than 180 weeklies, about half of which cover news while the rest feature sports, entertainment, health and other subjects.

Private dailies in Burmese, English, Indian and Chinese languages were once vibrant in the former British colony, previously called Burma. But all were forced to close when late dictator Ne Win nationalized private businesses in 1964.

Under Ne Win's one-party Socialist government the standard of newspapers diminished to propaganda sheets. The most recent military regime ruled by Gen. Than Shwe used the country's three state-owned dailies as junta mouthpieces, which continue to be unpopular with low circulation.

Until just two years ago, this Southeast Asian nation's reporters were regarded as among the most restricted in the world, subject to routine state surveillance, phone taps and intense censorship. The censorship board would shut down newspapers temporarily for violations. Journalists were tortured, imprisoned and subjected to constant surveillance.

Testing their new freedoms, journalists and private publications have become bolder. They have printed once forbidden items including pictures and stories about anti-government demonstrations and sectarian violence. The once highly taboo images of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi are now often displayed, even in state-controlled media.

India gang-rape victim dies in Singapore hospital

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The Indian gang-rape victim whose assault in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests died in hospital on Saturday of injuries suffered in the attack, a Singapore hospital treating her said.

The death of the 23-year-old medical student could spawn new protests and possibly fresh confrontations with the police, especially in the Indian capital, which has been the focus of the demonstrations.

"We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4:45 a.m. on Dec 29, 2012 (15:45 a.m. ET Friday). Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side," Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

The woman, who was severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was flown to Singapore by the Indian government on Wednesday for specialist treatment.

Most rapes and other sex crimes in India go unreported and offenders are rarely punished, women's rights activists say. But the brutality of the assault on December 16 triggered public outrage and demands for better policing and harsher punishment for rapists.

The case has received blanket coverage on cable television news channels. The woman has not been identified but some Indian media have called her "Amanat", an Urdu word meaning "treasure".

Earlier on Friday, the hospital had reported that the young woman's condition had taken a turn for the worse. It said that her family had been informed and were by her side.

T.C.A. Raghavan, the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, said after her death that the family has expressed a desire for her body to be flown back to India.

At a briefing earlier on Saturday, Raghavan declined to comment on reports in India accusing the government of sending her to Singapore to minimize the possible backlash in the event of her death.

Some Indian medical experts had questioned the decision to airlift the woman to Singapore, calling it a risky maneuver given the seriousness of her injuries. They had said she was already receiving the best possible care in India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government has been battling criticism that it was tone-deaf to the outcry and heavy-handed in its response to the protests in the Indian capital.

"It is deeply saddening and just beyond words. The police and government definitely have to do something more," said Sharanya Ramachandran, an Indian national who is working as an engineer in Singapore.

"They should bring in very severe punishment for such cases. They should start recognizing that it is a big crime."

"SIGNIFICANT BRAIN INJURY"

The Singapore hospital said earlier that the woman had suffered "significant brain injury" and was surviving against the odds. She had already undergone three abdominal operations before being flown to Singapore.

Demonstrations over the lack of safety for women erupted across India after the attack, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of New Delhi.

New Delhi has been on edge since the weekend clashes. Hundreds of policemen have been deployed on the streets of the capital and streets leading to the main protest site, the India Gate war memorial, have been shut for long periods, causing commuter chaos in the city of 16 million.

Political commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration that many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social and economic issues.

Many protesters have complained that Singh's government has done little to curb the abuse of women in the country of 1.2 billion. A global poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation in June found that India was the worst place to be a woman because of high rates of infanticide, child marriage and slavery.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

My WordPress Website ? auto insurance-Claymont

auto insurance Claymont DE The amount of cars on the road increases every year. This can lead to an increased likelihood of a car accident for you and your family. Automobile insurance can make the difference between a minor setback and a major hassle. So how can you figure out which type of insurance you need and how much to buy? Auto insurance protects you by covering the cost of damage caused to your car or someone else?s car and injury to other people, yourself, or passengers in your car, plus specific other incidents, such as burglary. No matter where you live, you are required to buy some type of auto insurance. Making the decision to drive without owning insurance could cause you to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage that you may have caused. Liability: This kind of insurance coverage will pay for the damage that you have caused. These damages can include personal injury, and property damage. If you are in legal trouble, this type of insurance will pay for your legal fees. Local laws typically require minimum amounts of liability insurance, but higher amounts are available and very beneficial. Personal Injury Protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also cover lost wages, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is usually set by the state. Medical Payments: Medical payment coverage can be purchased in states that are not considered no-fault; it will pay despite who may be responsible. All reasonable medical or funeral expenses will be covered under this insurance coverage. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Protect your car from damages from other sources by purchasing this type of coverage. This may include protection from burglary, vandalism, and fire or flood damage. Uninsured Motorist: If you are in an accident with a driver without insurance or a hit-and-run driver, this type of insurance coverage will make sure you are covered. Under-Insured Motorist: This pays for collision expenses when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have the right amount of insurance to cover the total amount of the damages. Other types of coverage, such as car rental, are also available.

Is Google Using AdWords Express Budgets To Promote Google+?

Google now offers small businesses using its AdWords Express service a way to promote their Google+ pages seemingly everywhere but on Google+ itself, which Google reasserts should be an ad-free zone. That?omission may make these ads less effective for those seeking new customers or followers to their Google+ pages. Meanwhile, the push gets those same small businesses spending their advertising dollars to promote Google+ itself for Google.

AdWords Express & Google+ Pages

In case you?re not?familiar?with AdWords Express, it?s Google?s version of automated paid search. With AdWord Express, small and local businesses who are in a time crunch and don?t have time to properly set up campaigns let Google run their ads. Google then chooses where to show the ads. Some will appear in Google search results, based on terms that Google selects. Some appear within Google Maps. Some appear on non-Google sites that are part of the Google advertising network.

Since some small businesses don?t have web sites, Google has offered them free ones to use with AdWords Express through its Get Your Business Online service. But now, Google has said businesses can drive visitors to their Google+ pages.

In a?post?late last week Christian Oestlien, a member of?Google Product Management, announced that AdWords Express would now ?offer? businesses a new way to promote their Google+ pages:

Along with the announcement Oestlien mentioned that this option would be available for all Google properties ? except, well, Google+. In fact Oestlien took a puesdo-swing at Facebook by stating:

? we only show these promotions when they?re appropriate?not overwhelming people with random ads when they?re trying to spend time with friends

Why No Advertising On Google+?

Many could argue that if you are trying ?attract more followers? they would want to do so on Google+ itself. Why show social network ads in search? Why show them for your Google+ page in maps? This is a hard stance that Google+ took throughout 2012. But the thing is, social ads work. There simply isn?t a better place for admins to try and grow fans with ads than from targeted ads in the social network.

Well, Can You Advertise To Just Google+ Users?

The answer is no. A Google representative?confirmed to us that the only targeting option is ?normal targeting,? so it will reach everyone. This is a huge negative for those AdWords Express advertisers who are trying to build a following for their Google+ page. Seeing that you can?t advertise on the social network and you can?t target those across the Google network with a Google+ enabled account, you have no guarantee that a click is coming from someone who has a Google+ account or if they have even heard of Google+ before.

So Just What Is This New Service That Google Is ?Offering??

The 10,000 foot view of this announcement reads like this:

  • You give your money to Google to handle online advertising
  • Google spends your money across their network
  • Instead of driving traffic to your site, the new?announcement??offers? businesses the ability to let Google drive traffic to a Google property
  • The goal is to ?attract new followers and customers? but Google can?t show ads within the social network itself.
  • Nor can active Google+ users be targeted

Why Is This A Bit Suspect?

While Google+ has been relatively successful, it has come at the hands of a huge investment. From advertising during big NFL games, to worldwide print and TV campaigns, to big NFL partnerships, Google has spent?inordinate marketing resources on the Google+ product. In a way, Google is now leveraging AdWords Express users? budgets to do so too.

The glaring lack of ability to target ads on Google+ itself, or even to target users who are on Google+ makes for un-targeted, poor advertising for those looking to build their pages. The majority of those users who click will have to be sold on Google+ first before they can follow a brand page. Instead of hitting active users, advertisers are simply handing money to Google to blast the budget across the general Google network.

None of the other social networks operate in this fashion. Facebook offers a variety of advertising options across the social network, Twitter has a handful of ad options across Twitter. The key is that all of these are on the network that has that social scent trail to it.

So Is This New Service Helpful For Anyone?

Is this worth doing? In some cases, absolutely. If a company doesn?t have resources for a website and they don?t want to promote their Facebook page, this gives them an option to get up and running. If you are on a shoestring budget and need a landing page, this option may?quench?your?thirst?for more eyeballs. The issue isn?t with the ?attract new customers? statement that Oestlien made, but more about the attraction of new followers aspect as there is no Google+ user targeting built into the service.

While this new targeting may look valuable at-a-glance, severe lack of targeting makes it tough to recommend to anyone. From Google?s standpoint however, this would be an ideal selection for advertisers as a big byproduct of the budget is more awareness of the Google+ product.

Bipartisan senators propose curbing filibusters

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan group of senators is proposing to put modest limits on filibusters, the procedural delays that minority parties often use to grind the Senate's work to a halt.

Led by Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan and Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the group's proposal is aimed at heading off a bitter partisan fight over the issue when the new Congress convenes next week. The proposal would make it harder to filibuster at the start of debate and impose other curbs.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Republicans filibuster too frequently. He has threatened to impose even stricter filibuster limits with a simple majority vote ? in effect ramming them through over GOP objections.

Republicans say they filibuster because Reid often blocks them from offering amendments.

Ouya releases SDK for $99 game console, shows off developer ...

Now that Ouya is shipping the first developer kits?of its upcoming $99 Android-based video game console, the company has opened a software developer portal, launched a software developer kit, and shown off an early preview of the user interface.

The Ouya team has also posted an unboxing video, giving us a good look at the first developer consoles.

What we?re looking at isn?t the finished hardware. While the developer kits have the same basic specs as the units that will ship to customers in April (including an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage), these special edition models have clear plastic cases.

That means you can see the guts of the Ouya game console without even opening it up ? and the same goes for the 2 wireless controllers that come with the kits.

Unfortunately the game controllers are still works in progress, and the team is still working out some of the kinks.

The developer kits also include microUSB ports that let you connect the system to a computer for Android programming and debugging. It?s not clear if the final product will have that port ? but one of the key goals of the Ouya project is to create an open platform, so I can?t see why the consumer device would ship without a microUSB port.

Meanwhile, folks interested in developing games for the Ouya who haven?t been able to snag one of the limited edition developer kits can check out the Developer Portal for details on coding for the Ouya using off-the-shelf hardware to test their games.

The Ouya is available for pre-order for $99 plus shipping, and it?s expected to ship in April, 2013.

Dragonfly has human-like power of concentration

Dragonflies lack humans' big brains, but they still get the job done, according to new research that suggests that these insects have brain cells capable of feats previously seen only in primates.

Specifically, the dragonflies can screen out useless visual information to focus on a target, a process called selective attention. The new study, published Dec. 20 in the journal Current Biology, is the first to find brain cells devoted to selective attention in an invertebrate animal.

Selective attention is crucial for responding to one stimulus among the dozens of distractions that clamor for notice at any given time, said Steven Wiederman of the University of Adelaide in Australia.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. The year's top ancient mysteries (and missteps)

The past year saw plenty of controversy over ancient mysteries ? and we're not just talking about Maya prophecies. So what happened to "Franken-saurus," the Gospel of Jesus' Wife and the plan to clone a woolly mammoth?

    2. Unselfish brain cells found in monkeys
    3. Starvation didn't wipe out saber-toothed cats
    4. Two new orchid species found

"Imagine a tennis player having to pick out a small ball from the crowd when it's traveling at almost 200 kilometers an hour," Wiederman said in a statement. "You need selective attention in order to hit that ball back into play."

But little is known about how the brain locks onto its targets and ignores all else. To find out, Wiederman, who is from the university's Center for Neuroscience Research, and his colleague David O'Carroll turned to an unlikely animal. The researchers have long studied insect vision, and the dragonfly turns out to be quite adept in that arena. [ Photos: Dew-Covered Dragonflies & Other Sparkling Insects ]

"The dragonfly hunts for other insects, and these might be part of a swarm ? they're all tiny moving objects," Wiederman said. "Once the dragonfly has selected a target, its neuron activity filters out all other potential prey. The dragonfly then swoops in on its prey ? they get it right 97 percent of the time."

Using a glass probe with a tip 1,500 times smaller than a human hair, the researchers measured the neuronal activity that enables such amazing aerial hunting. A similar process is at work in the primate brain, O'Carroll said in a statement, but researchers weren't expecting to see the same thing in an insect that evolved 325 million years ago.

"We believe our work will appeal to neuroscientists and engineers alike," O'Carroll said. "For example, it could be used as a model system for robotic vision. Because the insect brain is simple and accessible, future work may allow us to fully understand the underlying network of neurons and copy it into intelligent robots."

Plenty of other insects have inspired robot designs. Swiss scientists, for example, have built a hovering drone that mimics insects in its ability to survive collisions with hard objects. Sometimes insects are recruited directly. North Carolina State University researchers reported in September that they'd managed to create cyborg Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The scientists wired a microcontroller to the insects' sensory organs, enabling them to steer the cockroaches' movements.

Holiday Bowl 2012: Baylor, UCLA Set To Match Offenses In San Diego

By Dave Miller, National Football Post

The 2012-13 college football postseason continues Thursday night as Baylor and UCLA collide in the Holiday Bowl.

Let's take a look at some of the most important aspects of this matchup between the Bears and the Bruins.

Baylor (7-5) vs. UCLA (9-4) at 9:45 p.m. ET on ESPN
San Diego, California

? Offensive fireworks: Expect a lot of points to be scored Thursday night in San Diego, and I wrote earlier this month that this game could be one of the more exciting matchups this postseason. Baylor quarterback Nick Florence has done a great job of picking up where Robert Griffin III left off, and receiver Terrance Williams has been the main target of Florence, much as Kendall Wright was for RG3. The Bears, who are making their third consecutive postseason appearance for the first time in school history after finishing the year with three consecutive wins, have the most productive offense in the country. They are ranked No. 1 in total yards per game (578.75) and are No. 3 in passing (353.25), with Florence tossing 31 touchdown passes and Williams catching 95 passes for 1,693 yards and 12 scores. To make matters worse for the UCLA defense, Bears tailback Lache Seastrunk came on at the end of the year to show why he was once one of the top-ranked recruits in the nation. His 76-yard touchdown against Oklahoma State while injuring his leg on the play is still being replayed on YouTube, and he recently declared to the Sporting News that he is going to win the Heisman Trophy next season. The Bruins will also be missing safety Tevin McDonald, who failed a drug test and is suspended for the game. Meanwhile, UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley shined in his first season as the starter in Westwood. The dual-threat has taken better care of the football after his four-interception effort against Cal earlier in the year, as he has thrown 13 touchdowns against just four interceptions over his last seven games since that game against the Golden Bears. He also has added five scores on the ground during that stretch. His main partner in the backfield, senior Johnathan Franklin, broke Maurice Jones-Drew's mark for most all-purpose yards in Bruins history and rushed for 1,700 yards and 13 scores this fall, including a nearly 200-yard effort on the ground against a Stanford defense that was No. 1 against the run.

? The defenseless Bears: Baylor allows an average of nearly 514.0 yards per game, which ranks 119th in the nation, and it has the 115th-ranked scoring defense in the country at over 38 points per game. While the Bears will give up their share of yards on the ground, they were able to hold Collin Klein and Kansas State to just 76 rushing yards. However, Texas Tech ran for 208 yards and Oklahoma State for 218 in the last two contests. So the best bet for the Bruins may be through the air, as the Bears rank 118th nationally in passing defense, giving up over 320 yards per game. Tight end Joseph Fauria might be a big factor because he is a tough matchup for even the best of defenses. Hundley should look his way early and often.

? Opposite directions: Baylor enters this game on a three-game winning streak, which helped it become bowl-eligible when the future once looked bleak following a four-game skid. Getting a berth to the Holiday Bowl is quite the treat, considering the Bears will be facing a team that could have gone to the Rose Bowl. The Bears ended the year with wins over then-No. 1 Kansas State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. While momentum is not a huge factor heading into the postseason, Art Briles and Co. certainly have to feel like they can beat a lot of teams with the way they closed out the season. Meanwhile, UCLA enters the postseason with two consecutive losses, both of which occured to Stanford. While Jim L. Mora's squad will not be playing in the Rose Bowl in his first season because of the loss in the Pac-12 title game, the Bruins can still reward their fans with a closing victory in the program's first appearance in the Holiday Bowl. And they should have a large amount of supporters in the stands.

A Cozy Coffee Spot in Oakland's Temescal Alley: The CRO Cafe ...

luigi doorway

Tucked away inside a cozy storefront along the quaint corridor of Temescal Alley is north Oakland?s newest coffee shop, The CRO Cafe. Owner Luigi Oldani named his business after his daughter, Camille Rosemary, and officially opened its doors on a First Friday art walk this past November.

sign

Prior to having a permanent brick-and-mortar location, Oldani held pop-ups at the now-defunct Cafe Fanny in Berkeley (currently the home of Bartavelle). While they were remodeling, Oldani rolled in with his coffee cart everyday for three months during the summer.

He?d also host open houses with espresso at his metal fabrication shop, Oldani Art Studio, where he runs his other full-time enterprise creating custom furnishings for local businesses.

?The shop is a spot where we make anything and everything,? he says. ?Mostly the big jobs have been build-outs for cafes and restaurants. We opened up three La Boulange restaurants right before they sold out to Starbucks. We did a whole bunch of tables, counters, bars, handrails, stairways ? lots of architectural details. Our showpiece space is the work that we did at Sightglass, which was collaborative. We didn?t do all of the metalwork over there, but we did some.?

Joseph Luigi

Oldani is a former mechanical engineer, so he enjoys the process of coming up with solutions for spaces ? especially for his own tiny cafe.

?It?s 170-square-feet, so there?s not a lot of electricity or amenities. It was a challenge to figure out how to get in and operate.? He and the group of friends he regularly works with at his studio designed everything for the interior just a few weeks before opening. Oldani says there?s still lots of items on his to-do list, including adding more shelving for retail products, finishing up planter boxes for vines that will snake up towards the counter, an awning, producing a copper-clad storefront using scraps from his dad?s art studio, and most importantly, ?get a sign so that people can see that there?s a little hole-in-the-wall spot to get coffee.?

drying cups

?I wanted to do a coffee business long before I knew what good coffee was,? Oldani chuckles. Disenchanted with his engineering job, he started to look for a different outlet. Oldani got the idea that, ?running a coffee shop would get me a better work-life balance where I?d get to interact with people on a more personal level and hand my work product directly over to the person who was going to be consuming it. And to really be able to do that in a much shorter cycle than I was able to do as an engineer.?

coffee pour

Oldani?s former job did help inform his next career path. ?With coffee, there?s a bit of an idealization of the machinery. Coffee people tend to take their gear and their preparation really seriously. Coffee in itself is a volatile and tricky product to prepare well. And so the disciplined process and art of production and equipment appealed to me.?

His work at Sightglass helped inspire him to transition out of his engineering job and pursue coffee as one of his next ventures. It was through his interactions with its proprietors that Oldani became serious about how he tasted and brewed coffee. He attended their training sessions to supplement his own independent study efforts and practiced brewing coffee at his art studio for two years. Oldani slowly acquired his equipment over time, including a vintage La San Marco espresso coffee machine that was formerly used at Oliveto.

luigi pour milk

?I have an affinity for the lever mechanism. A lot of the new machines are trying to duplicate what the old machines inherently do with the lever. There?s a quick, ramping up of pressure at the beginning of the shot which tapers off to a lower pressure at the end. And the newer machines try to do it by controlling pumps and a lot of electronics, whereas this machine is almost all mechanism. And it does a really beautiful job of the exact same thing mechanically, which also happens to make it a really great machine for doing portable business as it requires less electricity and is more of a workhorse.?

In addition to its coffee drinks, CRO Cafe also serves up a delicious hot chocolate. Oldani?s fiancee and business partner, Sacha Badme, honed her culinary skills by taking a chocolate class at Tante Marie?s cooking school. She uses unsweetened TCHO chocolate as the base and creates her own custom blend that imparts a rich sweetness to their warm confection.

hot chocolate overhead

Looking ahead to the future, Oldani is currently converting an antique milk truck into a mobile espresso truck and hopes to roll it out in the East Bay in the near future. He?s also building food service tricycles for the Exploratorium and hopes the experience will spur his ability to finish the truck soon. While he has no plans to roast his own coffee ? ?although I could totally see a time when that would be really compelling and could see myself becoming obsessed with it? ? Oldani plans to keep a limited menu at CRO Cafe to keep the focus on serving great espresso drinks.

?The thing that is compelling to me is that there?s so much mediocre coffee available and maybe it?s a better business model. But there?s a growing interest in fanatical preparation and sourcing the highest quality ingredients. It feels like we?re serving people who are only interested in that, although that?s a much smaller segment of the market. The larger roasteries and multiple cafe outlets really control the cost of a cup of coffee and have the advantage of bigger vertical integration in that they source, roast and distribute on a larger scale so their margins are better than ours. But if you spend a lot of time and money trying to make the best coffee, people do appreciate it. I?m hoping that this market will increase, and I?m really excited to see that growth and be a part of that.?

EnergyFit Nevada Improves Home Quality

An EnergyFit home stands out.My last column about the season of giving suggested that Green Living can be a wonderful way to express our appreciation to those we care about. Just after I wrote it, a friend sent a wonderful email providing a real world example of exactly what I had in mind. I?ll refer to this couple as Jenn and Rob.

The excitement in Jenn?s email was obvious. She mentioned ?a Merrier Christmas season? for her and Rob, attributing it to the energy efficient, home quality improvements they had implemented earlier this year after moving in to a home built in the early 60s.

NV Energy graph of relative home energy use is one indicator of home quality.Jenn included some images of a recent online utility bill and wrote, ?Just look at our latest NV Energy bill. See the graph comparing our energy use to neighboring homes?! Our house is a little larger than average for this neighborhood and we are paying close to 40% less each month in energy bills!?

Not Very Sexy

She told me later that she just got excited while paying the bill and decided to share the news with her friends. Energy efficiency may not be the sexiest thing in the world, but I can almost guarantee that every time Jenn and Rob get their bill, they will both be grateful for what they have given to each other.

How did they do it? Here is what Jenn wrote:

?Following our energy efficiency upgrades we tested out at about a 37% improvement. And our NV Energy bills have been right on track! We started with an $11,000 total package that included a new variable speed pool pump, blown-in attic insulation, replacement of one of two heat pumps, and new programmable thermostats. Still, we were only out of pocket $1,700 after all the great rebates and our green mortgage! We have lots more we want to do (mainly windows and patio doors ? there?s tons of them!) and want to see just how low we can go?before Santa finally brings our solar panels (next year, maybe??).

?Oops! ?almost forgot to include one of our favorite new features?our Solar Water Heater?love it! At least we have one sexy solar panel on our roof!?

Hmm, perhaps I was wrong about this stuff not being sexy. Jenn?s excitement really comes through in her message, as well as the fact that they are nowhere near done. The couple is looking forward to further changes that will lower their bills even more while improving their home quality, comfort and value.

Unexpected Results

Aside from experiencing a more comfortable summer this year, Jenn said one welcome benefit was immediately obvious. When one of their old heat pumps was replaced with a more efficient unit, the contractors also repaired a previously undetected problem with the air intake system. This led to an unexpected improvement in the indoor air quality of the home that was delightfully noticed within minutes of turning on the new system.

If you are interested in giving your family a similar gift, you are in for a pleasant surprise. EnergyFit Nevada is a non-profit organization that helps homeowners through the entire process, step by step. They provide pre-qualified contractors; they are aware of all available incentives, including NV Energy, Southwest Gas and others; and can even explain the benefits of a green mortgage. Best of all, they offer performance-based rebates that help pay for your improvements.

The Process

The basic process is simple. Initial testing establishes a baseline that, coupled with a detailed inspection, helps determine what improvements are best suited for each particular home. The homeowner selects from the available options and the work is done by contractors who are properly trained for the program. Final testing determines the amount of improvement, and therefore the rebate amount.

EnergyFit Nevada consists of a great group of people who are making a difference. They have helped a lot of folks like Jenn and Rob. If you have an older home and high energy bills, why not give them a call? It just might be the best gift you can buy.

Oxfam: 'Depressing' portrayals hurt Africa aid

Oxfam UK

Oxfam UK launched a new advertising campaign this week seeking to shift the focus to progress in Africa and away from 'depressing' images fostered by Live Aid and other well-intentioned efforts.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Twenty-seven years after Live Aid viscerally brought Africa's famine and poverty home to billions worldwide, the head of a major international charity?warned Wednesday that the "depressing" stereotypes left in its wake were counterproductive and risked driving help away.

The British arm of Oxfam International called images of starving babies and other familiar depictions of Africa over the last quarter-century "manipulative and hopeless," desensitizing potential donors and leading them to the conclusion that conditions in the developing world can never improve.?

Oxfam launched a new advertising campaign this week celebrating Africa's natural beauty and progress toward alleviating hunger. Called "Food for All," the campaign features images of lush green scenery, wildlife and thriving African food markets.

The campaign's tagline: "Let's Make Africa Famous for Its Epic Landscapes, Not Hunger."

Dame Barbara Stocking, the British charity's chief executive, said in a posting on Oxfam's website that "we've come a long way since the 1980s and Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'"

But "we need to shrug off the old stereotypes and celebrate the continent's diversity and complexity," she contended.

Band Aid, the musical charity supergroup formed in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in response to the crippling famine in Ethiopia. In 2004, on the song's 20th-anniversary re-release, the World Development Movement condemned it as "patronizing, false and out of date."

Geldof and Ure organized the landmark fundraising concert Live Aid in 1985, bringing dire conditions in Africa front and center to people around the world.

"'Patronizing' isn't the word" to describe the message fostered by Band Aid and other well-intentioned campaigns, Stocking said Wednesday in an interview on Sky News. "It's just this negativity. ...

"In order for people to understand what's happening in Africa, we've also got to tell the good stories, and there has been good news in Africa," said Stocking, who is retiring in the new year after serving with the charity since 2001.?

"Otherwise, people just feel put off and (believe) there's nothing that can be done about Africa," she said. "And that's the big worry for us ? that people feel it's all hopeless, when it clearly isn't."

World Bank statistics indicate that the world's heaviest concentration of malnutrition remains in Africa, afflicting as many as 15 percent of all children under 5 in some countries in the southern and eastern regions. And in June, the U.N. Children's Fund reported that 1.5 million children were at imminent risk of starvation in the western half of the continent.

But while acknowledging that international aid has made few if any inroads on hunger, Oxfam said in a report this month that countries south of the Sahara Desert had made "one of the most remarkable turnarounds in development ... in the last decade." It called the 22 years from 1990 to 2011 an "African renaissance."

"Economies have been growing even in the face of economic and financial instability elsewhere in the world, poverty has fallen and child mortality has dropped considerably, among the most visible indicators of progress," the report said.

The real story, Stocking said Wednesday, is that "aid money is really working."

But in the end, she said, "we don't want to have to give aid money to Africa. We want economic development, enterprise ? that's what we're really aiming to do."
