Cyrus keen for small wedding

London - Miley Cyrus doesn't want an extravagant wedding.

The Can't Be Tamed singer - who is engaged to The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth and recently referred to him as her ?hubby? - plans to have a small wedding because she doesn't want to attract a lot of attention.

The 20-year-old singer told Cosmopolitan magazine: ?I can't even get coffee without a million paparazzi following me, so I don't know why anyone thinks I'm going to have this huge, extravagant wedding. That is so not who I am.?

But the former Hannah Montana star also admitted she is thrilled to have found Liam at such a young age because she hates dating.

She said: ?I'm happy I don't have to date anyone. I was like, 'I'm so happy I'm married, because you guys are cruel!'?

This is the third time Miley has hinted that the couple have already tied the knot.

However, a spokesperson for her 23-year-old fiance insisted to People.com that the couple are ?definitely not married? yet.

Miley previously said that while she is really in love with Liam, they are in no rush to marry.

She previously said: ?I already feel married. I know we are forever. I don't need the paper right now.

?I don't know when we will get married yet. We are still enjoying being engaged. I've got so much planning to do with the tours and getting my record out. First I have my movie, then my record - then I'll do my wedding planning.? - Bang Showbiz

Pr?vo: Most Czechs want to die at home, only few do | Prague Monitor

?TK |

30 January 2013

Prague, Jan 29 (CTK) - Most Czechs or 85 percent want to die at home but only one-fifth of them can really see their wish come true since the death and dying have been pushed to the margin of society, the daily Pravo writes yesterday.

According to statistics, some 60 percent of Czechs die in hospital, about 9 percent in other health care institutions and another 6 percent in social care homes, Pravo says.

It points to various reasons for this situation.

The health care system is used to fight for life in any case even though the patient's condition is hopeless.

Death is not being discussed much in society either for fears of it or because people do not know how to cope with and react to it, Pravo writes.

This confused feeling is also reflected in funeral ceremonies, it adds.

Though psychologists consider the funeral a clear and necessary final step for the survivors that enables them to pay their last respects to their dead, the number of funeral ceremonies in the country has been decreasing. About one-third of the dead are buried without a funeral, Pravo says.

One of the reasons may be the fact that people do not have enough money for it. However, experts do not share this opinion, recalling that the funeral costs approximately equal a national average monthly pay in the Czech Republic, which is some 24,300 crowns.

Olga Nesporova, who focuses on these issues at the Labour and Social Affairs Research Institute, recalls that funerals had considerably simplified and lost their ceremonial character with the decline of the church's importance under the communist regime.

Moreover, the predominant form of burial is cremation, which has strengthened this trend, Pravo writes.

Funerals have become more and more formal and empty in terms of symbols, and this is why many people consider them useless.

Funeral homes, too are to blame for the situation since they do not offer any new ideas. Besides, they cannot advertise their services, Nesporova said.

Health care workers have taken control of the death, which has become more or less technical matter, she told Pravo.

However, people are less and less capable of coping with dying morally and ethically, Pravo writes.

It recalls that the first hospices that offer spiritual and psychological support to dying people were established in the Czech Republic in the 1990s.

The offer of assistants to help the family to cope with the death and arrange a funeral and other formalities emerged only recently.

According to psychologists, as Czechs do not speak about death, most of them are not prepared for it, they do not express their wishes in this respect and let it up to their relatives who often do not know what to do, Pravo writes.

Church leaders call for tighter gun restrictions

Lansing ? Fifty southern Michigan church leaders marched, sang and prayed at the Capitol on Tuesday morning in support of action from Gov. Rick Snyder and lawmakers to quell gun violence in Detroit, Flint and other cities plagued by rising murder rates.

"Thirty thousand people died last year in gun violence and we lost four people in Benghazi, but what gets talked about?" said the Rev. Ira Edwards of Flint, who's among clergy pressing for more attention to murder in Michigan's biggest cities.

The ministers said they favor reforms such as universal background checks for firearms purchases, improved mental health care and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

The clergy, part of a movement called Michigan Prophetic Voices, oppose any further slackening of state gun restrictions and dispute National Rifle Association claims that arming citizens and stationing armed guards at schools are the best ways to discourage shootings.

"You do not stop a flood by putting more water out there," said Bishop James Williams of Spirit and Christian Truth Ministries in Detroit. "You do not stop gun violence by putting more guns out there."

Edwards and Williams said they also hope Snyder will provide state backing for an intervention program they say reduced gun violence by 30 percent in Boston. It uses people who've been involved in the problem, especially past offenders, as paid interveners who seek to prevent individual incidents of violence from spiraling into revenge and additional shootings.

Detroit had 386 killings last year, up by 42 from 2011. Flint has had more than 50 killings each of the past three years.

Firearms are on the minds of state lawmakers, too, as President Barack Obama presses for national gun measures in the wake of the killing of 20 children and six adults at a Newtown, Conn., school.

The federal proposals include an assault weapons ban, universal background checks for gun buyers, improved mental health services and help for schools wanting better security.

State Rep. Andy Schor, D-Lansing, has introduced two bills restricting handguns. One bans open carrying of weapons at schools, churches, day care centers, sports venues, bars and taverns, hospitals and state universities. Concealed weapons already are prohibited in gun-free zones. The second adds libraries to the list of gun-free areas.

"I support all of our citizens' right to keep and bear arms, but I also ... feel strongly about ensuring that concealed and open-carry guns are not allowed in very sensitive areas," Schor said.

In December, Snyder vetoed a bill that would have opened up schools, churches and libraries to concealed-carry handguns.

Last week, a Senate committee pushed forward a bill that would register formal opposition to Obama's efforts by declaring any firearm produced and sold exclusively in Michigan to be immune to federal gun rules. The bill is ready for a full Senate vote.

Cupping: The spa treatment that keeps on giving | Fitness

g cupping side by side

My introduction to cupping came via Gwyneth Paltrow. Remember when she showed up for a red carpet with circle marks all over her back? Well that was cupping. I know because the entertainment outlets went nuts reporting about the ancient alternative therapy ? and painted her as a bit of a freak for intentionally bruising herself. I remember thinking: If health-nut Gwyneth is a fan, it must have merit. And it does.

Fast-forward and cupping is now not only offered by chiropractors and acupuncturists, it?s a bona fide spa treatment with a long list of reported benefits: it boosts blood flow and lymphatic drainage to ease aches and pains, increases range of motion in tight muscles and joints, aids digestion and calms the nervous system. It?s also said to unblock stagnant energy? and get the qi flowing. So I booked myself a 50-minute appointment at The Centre for Well-Being at The Phoenician. Let the healing and qi-flowing begin!

The Treatment
Traditionally cupping places heated glass bulbs via suction to the back, but The Phoenician has a modern spin. Larry, a 25-year massage veteran who recently added cupping to his arsenal of healing practices, explained that instead of heated glass he?d be using silicone cups of various sizes, no heating necessary. And instead of just keeping them stationary, he?d be carefully dragging them along specific meridians for a kind of reverse Swedish. Regular massage uses positive pressure (pushing) while cupping uses negative pressure (suction) to pulls excess fluids and toxins to the surface, thus the discoloration. ?It?s the difference between sweeping and vacuuming,? said Larry. Sounded good to me.

Now, I have to admit that I didn?t go in thinking I?d be getting some sort of fluffy duffy massage; I thought of it more as a medical treatment?. along the lines of a colonic. Thankfully I was way wrong. It was like massage meets acupuncture. As Larry suctioned and soothed my muscles, something happened: I let go of a little tension, a little stress, and melted into the massage table. And not once did I tense up with the tickles, a regular occurrence when I?m on the massage table.

While Larry worked his magic (and I continued melting), he explained that cupping isn?t for everyone. It?s not recommended for pregnant women, and he wouldn?t recommend it to anyone who can?t handle a deep tissue massage. But it can work wonders on sprains and he?s even seen some success with cellulite, although you probably need more than one treatment to see a difference.

The After-Effects
Yes, I had marks, but Larry said they were pretty faint in comparison to the norm ? ?I must be pretty toxin-free,? he said. I beamed, like he?d just told me I looked 10 years younger. And for the record, those Gwyneth circles aren?t bruises?no capillaries are actually ruptured, said Larry?they?re the toxic stuff coming to the surface.

The marks lasted a couple days and so did that tingly relaxing feeling, especially in my back and upper shoulders. Even better, my trapezius, that muscle where the neck meets the shoulder which is permanently knotted thanks to a lifetime of teeth-grinding, noticeably deflated. And all this after only one treatment.

City of the Month: Park City, UT ? Travel Smart Blog

Last week, the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival honored the top independent movies and players. Every year, its host, Park City, Utah, takes the best supporting role for the annual celeb-studded event.

Park City is topping all the travel lists (Forbes, Travel + Leisure, Ski Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler) lately surpassing destinations such as Aspen. Why? Accessibility, creativity, and activity!

Park City is a transformed old mining town with three ski resorts surrounding it. The quaintness of Park City?s Main Street is a thin veil for souvenirs and high-end retail. And don?t be deceived by the quaint fa?ade as the price tag for a vacation in and around this city is never bargain-priced. The four block historic strip is perfect for strolling or you can step into Robert Redford?s restaurant, Zoom, which offers some delicious local fare.

Accessibility

Nobody wants to spend the better part of a day traveling into a destination. Park City is more accessible than many of the top ski resort towns ? located only 45 minutes from The Salt Lake City airport. The international airport serves many airlines; Delta Air Lines has nonstop flights from more than 100 cities. Shuttles are a better choice than renting a car.

Hotels in Park City are numerous; from the big brand hotels to the local lodges.

Creativity

It has become a hub of culinary creativity with more than 100 restaurants and some truly inspired eateries.

If dining among celebrities in a beautiful mountain setting sounds appealing, you?ll want to check-in to the Waldorf-Astoria. Get a table at Slopes, a new restaurant deemed America?s hottest hotel restaurant in 2012 by Travel & Leisure.

The Waldorf-Astoria?s renowned bar and lounge, Powder Ice Lounge, features a 14-foot sculpted ice bar (it?s literally made of ice) and is one of the most popular photo-ops in the city.

Activity

Park City features three world-class resorts ? Deer Valley Resort, Canyons Resort and Park City Mountain Resort ? that offer three seasons of fun for everyone. (I say three because spring is a transitional season when the resorts close, the snow melts, and the preparations for the summer season are taking place.)

In the winter, the powder is abundant. Park City is home to the steep mountains where the US Ski Team trains attracting the world?s top snow sport enthusiasts, and a very chic and sophisticated crowd.

The Utah Olympic Park near Park City was the site of the 2002 Bobsled, Luge and Ski Jumping competitions. Today, visitors are treated to a guided tour of the park, athlete training sessions, 70 mile-per-hour bobsled rides, zipline rides, Quicksilver alpine slide rides, Olympic museum, an interactive museum, freestyle aerial and ski jumping shows on Saturdays at noon and a variety of camps for all ages.

In the summer and fall, the resorts convert their lifts and runs into over 400 miles of trails for biking and hiking and endless activities. Deer Valley?s Mountain Biking School offers lessons for those looking to improve their skills or just a guide for some of the areas best trails.

MiniTime Trip Planning Website Family Travel Ideas

There?s such an overwhelming amount of travel information in the world, it?s beneficial to be able to narrow down your sources to solidly reliably ones. For parents planning family vacations, a new contender, MiniTime, is sure to come to the head of the pack. This post is sponsored by MiniTime, and in as such, I?ve given myself ample time to familiarize myself with the family travel site.

MiniTime Trip Planning Website for Family Travel ideas According to Think with Google, the five stages of travel are dreaming, planning, booking, experiencing, and, post-trip, sharing. 85% ? a huge percentage ? of leisure travelers use the internet as their main source for planning travel. So not only am I not the only one, I?m not even NEARLY the only one who spends hours mucking around online, narrowing down destination possibilities and hotel choices. Since the bulk of my leisure travel is done with my family, I?m really happy to have MiniTime as a new ?mucking around? site. MiniTime is a new family travel planning and booking site; it has TripAdvisor-esque user-generated reviews and ratings, and more in-depth family-friendly hotel/resort/inn/activity reviews written by family travel specialists.

MiniTime is, like I said, a pretty new site. But I love its pedigree. The guys who created its algorithms that filter ratings are the same smarty-pants that created a few dating sites, later bought by and integrated into JDate. Like a dating site, MiniTime has a filter. In this case, though, it filters though the large assortment of lodging options (and child-friendly activities) by destination and the ages of the users? children. After all, this is a family travel site, not a dating site! MiniTime also helps the user ? the mother or father, presumable ? book vacations and later, the MiniTime member can leave brief reviews and load in some relevant photos from their trip.

MiniTime Trip Planning Family Vacation Plans hotel reviews

While I haven?t booked travel through MiniTime, there is a function that allows users to find the best deals online (through parters) and book their stays. Just from noodling around, I found that there can be a large disparity in price options listed. For example, I selected a resort in Carlsbad for an imaginary LEGOLAND vacation (my kids are actually much too old to enjoy LEGOLAND anymore, though Carlsbad itself is a very pretty beach town). For my family of four requesting two rooms at the resort, one site (Skoosh) listed a $228 price, the other (Venere), $837. I?ll let you guess which booking site I?d have chosen. It?s clear that MiniTime saves time researching travel deals.

The site interface is generally very easy to navigate, and the algorithm sorts well by age and destination. I do wish it was simpler to figure out a couple of things, though. One, it?s not obvious to find how to ?follow? a different user (unless that other user is already following you). You?ll need to go to that user?s profile page to do so. Two, it?s not possible to create a rating and review for a hotel, resort, or inn that?s not already in MiniTime?s database, or to create the page for it yourself so that you can review it. And three, not all countries are represented. In fact, at this time, there is a heavy bias toward the United States, Canada and?Mexico. But wait! Remember, this is a new site! The more travel planners use it (and create the reviews, and rate hotels, etc), the more fleshed-out it will be. I?ll be happy to watch MiniTime grow and, possibly, give some competition to that other travel-planning site, TripAdvisor. I love the simplicity of the navigation and the ease with which photos ? even huge ones ? load up to it.

MiniTime Family Trip Planning Interface family travel advice

Try MiniTime for yourself; you don?t have to sign up as a member to avail yourself of its algorithm or navigate around the site. Plug in your children?s ages, where you want to go, and then request either a destination overview or local accommodation options. Click ?Bring the Kids,? and blammo. Instant results, and other suggested options as well. If even this sounds like too much of a commitment, click ?Take a Tour? on the main page. There?s short video that?ll show you around. There is also a ?Trip Tips? section, with useful family travel service pieces such as packing tips and road trip game ideas.

You can see my reviews of the Grand Wailea in Maui, Craftsman Inn in Fayetteville, and Homewood Suites in Miami for some examples of these brief user-generated write-ups. So far, the other users have created an amiable, easygoing site culture. MiniTime will even cut down on your ?mucking around? time spent planning travel online.?I like what I see, and I?m pretty sure you?ll like it, too.

Commission!

Hi I?m looking for someone that could make a map for me. It?s for an RP I?m running at the moment and I?d like a detailed map that can be a fun or whimsical.

The setting is a Steampunk Post-apocalyptic desert called ?The Flats? and the RP has been running for some time now so your work will be seen and not just forgotten about and buried. You can learn more here. roleplay/white-group/

As it is for an RP there are certain criteria the Map must meet like positioning of locations etc. Apart from that it?s all up to you the legend, markings and decals. I have a very basic paint version that I?l send to intrestred folks so they can see positioning etc. (If you think I?m going to post a crummy paint image in a forum for artists you?re crazy.)

Anyway I hope someone can come up with something as my RPers would love to see one.

Twitter Is Finally Preparing To Release Its Advertising API In Q1, Say Sources

Twitter birdPeople have speculated that 2013 will be the year that Twitter will reach $1 billion in advertising revenues. That strategy could get a boost very soon with the entry of mass-market advertising: Twitter is finally gearing up to launch its advertising API some time in Q1. Aimed at large advertisers and their agencies, it will give them the ability to launch scaled-up campaigns across the social network, and it also opens the door to more sophisticated targeting and analytics tools in the process.

At least 22 die in Egyptian clashes over death sentences

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 22 people died on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, adding to bloody street turmoil confronting Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Armored vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said after the violence. The state news agency quoted a general as saying the military aimed to "establish calm and stability in Port Said and to protect public institutions".

The unrest began with nationwide rallies on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, a democratic uprising that protesters now accuse Mursi of betraying by ramming through an Islamist-hued constitution.

While anniversary-related violence subsided, a new flare-up hit Port Said after a court sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in the deaths of 74 people after a local soccer match on February 1, 2012, many of them fans of the visiting team.

Residents ran wildly through the streets of Port Said in rage that men from their city had been blamed for the stadium disaster, and gunshots were reported near the prison where most of the defendants were being held.

State television, citing the Health Ministry, said 22 people were killed and more than 200 wounded. Security sources said at least two of the dead were policemen.

A witness said some men stormed a police station in Port Said, where protesters lit tires in the street, sending black smoke funneling into the air.

At least nine people were killed in clashes with police on Friday, mainly in the port of Suez where the army has also deployed. Hundreds were injured as police rained down tear gas on protesters armed with stones and some with petrol bombs.

The schism between Islamists and secular Egyptians is hurting efforts by Mursi, freely elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a slide in Egypt's currency.

The political strife and lack of security that has blighted the Arab world's most populous country over much of the post-Mubarak era is casting a chilling shadow over a parliamentary election expected to start in April.

Highlighting tensions, the opposition National Salvation Front coalition called for a government of national unity and an early presidential vote among other demands. It said it would call for more protests next Friday and could boycott the parliamentary election if its demands are not met.

Mursi's opponents say he has failed to deliver on economic pledges or be a president representing the full political and communal diversity of Egyptians, as he pledged.

His supporters say his critics do not respect the democracy that has given Egypt its first freely elected leader.

VICTIMS' RELATIVES CHEER

At the Port Said soccer stadium a year ago, many spectators were crushed and witnesses saw some thrown off balconies after the match between Cairo's Al Ahly and local team al-Masri.

Families of victims in court cheered and wept for joy when Judge Sobhy Abdel Maguid read a list of 21 names "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote execution, as all death sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

A total of 73 people have been standing trial. Other rulings will be issued on March 9, the judge said.

One relative in the court shouted: "God is greatest." Outside the Al Ahly club in Cairo, fans also cheered. They had threatened more violence unless the death penalty was meted out.

Thousands took to the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and other cities on Friday to protest against what they call the authoritarianism of Mursi's rule. Protesters in Cairo were again hurling stones at police lines in Cairo on Saturday.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 anti-Mubarak revolt and near where youths stoned police.

"PURSUING CRIMINALS"

Ahmed Salama, 28, a protester camped out with dozens of others in Tahrir, said: "The protests will continue until we realize all the demands of the revolution - bread, freedom and social justice."

In a statement in response to Friday's violence, Mursi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice". He urged Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing views peacefully.

The president met on Saturday with the National Defence Council, which includes senior ministers and security officials, to discuss the spate of violence.

In a televised statement, the National Salvation Front said it was holding Mursi responsible.

The Front was formed from disparate groups last year when Mursi awarded himself extra powers and fast-tracked an Islamist-flavored constitution to a referendum, opposed by the Front although the document was passed in the popular vote.

"Egypt will not regain its balance except by a political solution that is transparent and credible, by a government of national salvation to restore order and heal the economy and with a constitution for all Egyptians," prominent opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on his Twitter account.

Until the Front was formed, the opposition had struggled to unite and their vote had been split at presidential and parliamentary polls, helping Islamists. The last parliament was dissolved based on court order, demanding a new vote this year.

Mustapha Kamal Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University, said the latest violence reflected the frustration of many liberal-minded Egyptians and others.

"The state of polarization between Islamists and others is most likely to continue and will have a very negative impact on the state's politics, security and economy," he said.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose among Egyptians two years ago has unraveled, triggering bloody street battles last month.

Angry protests, clashes on Egypt anniversary

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptians delivered an angry backlash against President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood on Friday, marking the second anniversary of the start of the country's revolution with tens of thousands filling major squares and streets around the country to call for a new regime change.

Two years to the day that protesters first rose up against now-toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, Egypt is entrenched in the new phase of its upheaval ? the struggle between ruling Islamists and their opponents, played out on the backdrop of a worsening economy.

Rallies turned to clashes near Tahrir Square and outside the presidential palace in Cairo and in multiple cities around the country, with police firing tear gas and protesters throwing stones. At least four people, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed in the day's worst clashes, in the city of Suez, where protesters set ablaze a building that once housed the city's local government.

More than 370 were injured nationwide, the Health Ministry said, including five in Suez with gunshot wounds, raising the possibility of a higher death toll, the state news agency said.

Friday's rallies appeared to have brought out at least 500,000 opposition supporters, a small proportion of Egypt's 85 million people, but large enough to suggest that opposition to Morsi and his Islamist allies is strong in a country fatigued by two years of political turmoil, surging crime and a free falling economy that is fueling popular anger. Protests ? and clashes ? took place in at least 12 of Egypt's 27 provinces, including several that are Islamist strongholds.

"After what happened to me, I will never leave until Morsi leaves," said protester Sara Mohammed after she was treated for tear gas inhalation during clashes outside the president's palace in Cairo's Heliopolis district. "What can possibly happen to us? Will we die? That's fine, because then I will be with God as a martyr. Many have died before us and even if we don't see change, future generations will."

The immediate goal of the opposition was to have a show of strength to push Morsi to amend the country's new constitution, which was pushed through by his Islamist allies and rushed through a national referendum last month.

But more broadly, protesters are trying to show the extent of public anger against the Muslim Brotherhood, the organization Morsi hails from, which they say is acting unilaterally and taking over the state rather than setting up a broad-based democracy.

Morsi is Egypt's first freely elected and civilian president, a significant feat given that all his four predecessors were of military background. But his six months in office have been marred by some of the worst crises since Mubarak's ouster and divisions that have left the nation scarred and in disarray. A giant wave of demonstrations erupted in November and December following a series of presidential decrees, since rescinded, that gave Morsi near absolute powers, placing him above any oversight, including by the judiciary.

The Brotherhood and its Islamist allies, including the ultraconservative Salafis, have justified their hold by pointing to their string of election victories the past year ? though the opposition says they have gone far beyond what in many ways is a narrow mandate ? Morsi won the presidency with less than 52 percent of the vote. Brotherhood officials have increasingly depicted the opposition as undemocratic, trying to use the streets to overturn an elected leadership.

Thursday night, Morsi gave a televised speech that showed the extent of the estrangement between the two sides. He denounced what he called a "counter-revolution" that is "being led by remnants of ousted president Hosni Mubarak's regime to obstruct everything in the country."

Unlike in 2012, when both sides made a show of marking Jan. 25 ? though, granted, not together ? the Brotherhood stayed off the streets for Friday's anniversary. The group said it was honoring the occasion with acts of public service, like treating the sick and planting trees.

On the horizon are key elections to choose a new lower house of parliament. The opposition is hoping it can leverage public anger into a substantial bloc in the legislature, but it is still trying to weld together an effective campaign coalition in the face of Islamists' strength at the ballot box. Last winter, the Brotherhood and Salafis won around 75 percent of the lower house's seats, though the body was later disbanded by court order.

Pending the election of a new lower house, Morsi gave legislative powers to parliament's Islamist-dominated upper house, a normally toothless chamber that only about seven percent of Egypt's 50 million eligible voters bothered to elect in balloting last year.

The violence Friday pointed to the increasing tempers among some in the opposition, particularly younger men who have been the most restive. Clashes erupted outside the presidential palace when youths tried to push through a police barricade outside the gates. In other cities, protesters tried to break into offices of the Brotherhood's political party or government and security buildings.

Beyond the violence, the protests re-created the tone of the 18-day uprising against Mubarak, including the same chants, this time directed against Morsi ? "Erhal! Erhal!", Arabic for "leave, leave" and "the people want to topple the regime."

Some of the protesters are planning sit-in strikes in major squares and streets, insisting that they will not go home before Morsi leaves office.

Standing near Tahrir Square, retiree Ahmed Afifi declared that he joined Friday's protests because he was struggling to feed his five children on less than $200 a month.

"I am retired and took another job just to make ends meet," he said, his eyes tearing. "I am close to begging. Under Mubarak life was hard but at least we had security ... The first people hit by high prices are the poor people right here."

Tens of thousands massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where the 2011 uprising began, and outside Morsi's palace. Banners outside the palace proclaimed, "No to the corrupt Muslim Brotherhood government" and "Two years since the revolution, where is social justice?" Others demonstrated outside the state TV and radio building overlooking the Nile.

In two towns in the Nile Delta, Menouf and Shibeen el-Koum, protesters blocked railway lines, disrupting train services to and from Cairo. In Ismailia on the Suez Canal, protesters stormed the building housing the provincial government, looting some of its contents. There were also clashes outside Morsi's home in the Nile Delta province of Sharqiyah.

The demands of Friday's protesters vary. Some on the extremist fringe of Egypt's loosely knit opposition want Morsi to step down and the constitution adopted last month rescinded. Others are calling for the document to be amended and early presidential elections held.

"There must be a constitution for all Egyptians. A constitution that every one of us sees himself in it," opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said in a televised message posted on his party's website.

Egypt's bestselling novelist and democracy campaigner Alaa al-Aswany marched with ElBaradei on Friday to Tahrir. "It is impossible to impose a constitution on Egyptians, a constitution which was sponsored by the Supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the revolution today will bring this constitution down," he said.

Protester Ehab Menyawi said he felt no personal animosity against the Brotherhood but opposed its approach toward Morsi as Egypt's first freely elected leader.

"The Brotherhood thinks that reform was achieved when their man came to power and that in itself is a guarantee for the end of corruption," he said as he marched from the upscale Cairo district of Mohandiseen to Tahrir with some 20,000 others.

Morsi has kept government policy-making and the choice of appointments almost entirely within the Brotherhood. Members and supporters of the group are being installed bit by bit throughout the state infrastructure ? from governor posts, to chiefs of state TV and newspapers, down to preachers in state-run mosques.

Many were also angered by the constitution and the manner of its adoption. Islamists finalized the draft in a rushed, all-night meeting, throwing in amendments to fit their needs, then pushed it through a swift referendum in which only a third of voters participated. The result is a document that could bring a much stricter implementation of Shariah, or Islamic law, than modern Egypt has ever seen.

Looming over the struggle between the opposition against the Islamists is an economy that has been in tatters since Mubarak's ouster. The vital tourism sector has slumped, investment shriveled, foreign currency reserves have tumbled, prices are on the rise and the local currency has been sliding.

More pain is likely in the coming months if the government implements unpopular new austerity measures to secure a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

"Egypt is in a bad place, It's been wholly consumed with issues of power, and governance has been left by the wayside. None of this had to be," said Michael W. Hanna, a senior fellow at the New York-based Century Foundation.

New method identifies genes that can predict prognoses of cancer patients

Jan. 25, 2013 ? In recent years, it has been thought that select sets of genes might reveal cancer patients' prognoses. However, a study published last year examining breast cancer cases found that most of these "prognostic signatures" were no more accurate than random gene sets in determining cancer prognoses. While many saw this as a disappointment, investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montr?al (IRCM) saw this as an opportunity to design a new method to identify gene sets that could yield more significant prognostic value.

Led by Andrew Beck, MD, Director of the Molecular Epidemiology Research Laboratory at BIDMC, the team has developed SAPS (Significance Analysis of Prognostic Signatures), a new algorithm that makes use of three specific criteria to more accurately identify prognostic signatures associated with patient survival.

Their results, the largest analysis of its kind ever performed, are reported in the January 24 on-line issue of the journal PLOS Computational Biology.

"SAPS makes use of three specific criteria," explains Beck, who is also an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. "First, the gene set must be enriched for genes that are associated with survival. In addition, the gene set must separate patients into groups that show survival differences. Lastly, it must also perform significantly better than sets of random genes at these tasks."

In the new study, the scientific team applied the SAPS algorithm to gene expression profiling data from the study's senior author Benjamin Haibe-Kains, PhD, Director of the Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics Laboratory at IRCM and an Assistant Research Professor at the University of Montreal. The first collection of data was obtained from 19 published breast cancer studies (including approximately 3800 patients), and the second included 12 published gene expression profiling studies in ovarian cancer (including data from approximately 1700 patients).

When the investigators used SAPS to analyze these previously identified prognostic signatures in breast and ovarian cancer, they found that only a small subset of the signatures that were considered statistically significant by standard measurements also achieved statistical significance when evaluated by SAPS.

"Our work shows that when using prognostic associations to identify biological signatures that drive cancer progression, it is important to not rely solely on a gene set's association with patient survival," says Beck. "A gene set may appear to be important based on its survival association, when in reality it does not perform significantly better than random genes. This can be a serious problem, as it can lead to false conclusions regarding the biological and clinical significance of a gene set."

By using SAPS, Beck and his colleagues found that they could overcome this problem. "The SAPS procedure ensures that a significant prognostic gene set is not only associated with patient survival but also performs significantly better than random gene sets," says Beck. His team revealed new prognostic signatures in subtypes of breast cancer and ovarian cancer and demonstrated a striking similarity between signatures in estrogen receptor negative breast cancer and ovarian cancer, suggesting new shared therapeutic targets for these aggressive malignancies.

The findings also indicate that the prognostic signatures identified with SAPS will not only help predict patient outcomes but might also help in the development of new anti-cancer drugs. "We hope that markers identified in our analysis will provide new insights into the biological pathways driving cancer progression in breast and ovarian cancer subtypes, and will one day lead to improvements in targeted diagnostics and therapeutics," says Beck. "We also hope the method proves widely useful to other researchers." To that end, the team would like to create a web-accessible tool to enable investigators with little knowledge of statistical software and programming to identify gene sets significantly associated with patient outcomes in different diseases.

"We also plan to soon release a software package, which includes all the code and corresponding documentation of our analysis pipeline," adds Haibe-Kains. "This will allow others to fully reproduce our results while enabling the bioinformatics and computational biology communities to take over and potentially adapt and improve our pipeline to address important new issues in biomedicine."

Beck and his collaborators are currently working to further validate the prognostic signatures they identified in breast and ovarian cancers, with the hopes of bringing them closer to the clinic through the development of new diagnostics and treatments. "We are also extending our approach to other common cancers that lack robust prognostic signatures," he notes.

How Facebook Could Give Its New Search the - Technology Review

Facebook?s new Graph Search?a feature that lets you search through the data shared by your friends?clearly needs some work (see ?Facebook?s New Graph Search: Not Very Good?). It relies solely on the ?likes,? check-ins, and profile data provided by your friends ? signals that may be incomplete or unreliable unless you have friends all over the world who always faithfully check in wherever they go, and like products and brands honestly, not ironically. What?s more, queries must be structured in a way that often makes you feel like you?re talking to a database.

Fortunately for Facebook, help is on its way. The social networking giant has two valuable data stores that it has yet to connect up to its prominent new search box (so large that it displaces the company?s logo). Accessing these data stores could change how people find information online?not to mention the fortunes of arch rival Google.

First, Facebook could analyze the substance of user comments and other text people have added to the site, such as photo captions. That could help Facebook find many more recommendations not logged through check-ins or ?like? button clicks, and to sift out misleading likes.

Second, Facebook?s search tool has yet to move outside the social network?s own borders (and into Google?s territory) by tapping into the Open Graph, a system developed by Facebook in 2010 as a way for it to understand the products, services, or other entities described on Web pages and in mobile apps. Open Graph allows Facebook to understand, for example, the artist, song, and album you are interacting with each time you click a song in a music service such as Spotify. That kind of knowledge could help Facebook search apply to more than just content from your friends.

Both of these improvements were mentioned in a brief note at the end of last week?s launch, but the company has not said how soon they might arrive. But it is possible to predict what they might allow. A mostly overlooked upgrade made by Facebook?s partner Microsoft to its Bing search engine last week, which lets you search the text of friends? Facebook postings, provides a preview of how the first change might make Graph Search more useful. Enter ?Friends who like tequila? into Graph Search today and you?ll find only people who have joined groups dedicated to the drink. Connect your Facebook account to Bing and type ?tequila? into its new ?Friends? photos? search and you?ll find every photo that mentions tequila in a caption or a comment?so you?ll probably see a lot more images of people enjoying the beverage.

Bing?s new ability to access the text of your friends? posts to Facebook is also on display in a sidebar on its main search page. When I searched for ?Virgin Atlantic,? it showed me comments mentioning that airline even when the airline wasn?t tagged explicitly. I could see that search?or one for any brand or product?being much more informative about what friends think or have experienced than anything Graph Search could show me.

A small startup called Trove provides further evidence of the value of searching the full text of Facebook content (see ?A Better Way to Mine Your Facebook Past?). The company originally created a product similar to Graph Search, says cofounder and CEO Seth Blank, but after a poor response from trial users, it refocused on using clues found in comments and other text to answer more free-form queries.

Trove has developed several tricks that underscore how much more useful inputted text can be than just like button clicks. For example, a search for ?puppy photos? might reveal an unlabeled Instagram photo of a dog because the photo elicited a tweet using the word ?dog? and a Facebook comment saying ?adorable!?

More subtle signals like those might provide a better measure of which restaurants, products, and businesses friends really like?and why; far better than just ?likes,? says Blank.

Trove is currently experimenting with a browser plug-in that displays its results when a person searches on shopping sites Amazon and Newegg. ?People buy stuff based on what they find friends like using Trove,? says Blank. Facebook is likely exploring how to encourage similar buying behavior around its own search, with a view to charging for ads that appear alongside search results.

Facebook?s other untapped resource, the Open Graph, could also improve its power to recommend products?and hence offer new opportunities to position ads next to search results, as Google does. Folding it into Graph Search would also be a significant shift for Facebook, and it could change the way we use the Web.

Open Graph is powerful because it?s as much a creation of other websites and apps as it is of Facebook itself. Companies contribute Open Graph metadata to describe the things?products, brands, movies, people, and more?on their pages or in their apps because they want attention from Facebook?s billion users. Those efforts enable Facebook to understand what exactly it is people are interacting with, or are interested in, providing a kind of index of the wider Web and world.

The Open Graph is already big. Last year, entrepreneur Matthew Berk used five billion Web pages provided by the nonprofit Common Crawl (see ?A Free Database of the Entire Web?) to show that the Open Graph describes some 400 million objects (he also found that 22 percent of the Web?s pages link to Facebook in some way). Publishers would likely redouble their efforts to embrace the Open Graph if it were included in Facebook?s search, Berk predicts, making it an even more powerful index of what people care about online. ?People used to go out of their way to make it so that Google would find their content; now they look to Facebook,? he says. ?It?s like a redistribution of wealth.? Berk?s research into the Open Graph led him to found a startup called Lucky Oyster, a service due to launch this year where people can explicitly share and recommend products and content to Facebook friends.

However, Berk predicts that Facebook will face challenges taming ?noise? that pollutes the Open Graph, because contributors don?t describe their content in a consistent way. It?s a problem that also troubles Graph Search, which has made it abundantly clear that on Facebook, ?like? doesn?t always mean you really like something.

All the same, Facebook?s approach to organizing online information and making it searchable seems to make sense?as evidenced by Google?s enthusiastic efforts to build a social network (see ?The Man Building Google?s Social Network?) and a system that understands concepts mentioned on Web pages (see ?Google?s New Brain?).

?The big shift is to information being about things in the world and people, not just Web pages,? says Berk. ?At Google, you can see that social has become number one across the board.?

Egyptians protest on 2nd anniversary of revolution

CAIRO (AP) ? Two years after Egypt's revolution began, the country's schism was on display Friday as the mainly liberal and secular opposition held giant rallies saying the goals of the pro-democracy uprising have not been met and denouncing Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Thousands of protesters filled Cairo's central Tahrir Square, where the January 2011 uprising was born, and the area outside the presidential palace in the city's Heliopolis district. Throughout these places, the iconic Arab Spring chants of "Erha! Erhal!" or "leave, leave" and "the people want to topple the regime" rang out.

The protesters are using the anniversary to stage a show of strength in a bid to force Morsi to amend a disputed constitution drafted by his Islamist allies. They are also demanding freedom of expression and the independence of the judiciary.

Smaller crowds also gathered in central squares in the Mediterranean cities of Alexandria and Port Said as well as the Nile Delta city of Mehalla and Suez at the southern entrance of the Suez Canal.

Clashes broke out for a second day on some sidestreets near Tahrir and police fired tear gas to disperse the young men throwing stones. There were also clashes in Alexandria.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood supporters opted not to mark the anniversary on the streets, arguing that they will honor the occasion with acts of public service, like treating the sick and planting trees, a tactic dismissed by the opposition as a public relations stunt ahead of parliamentary elections expected in April.

The Brotherhood's ultraconservative allies known as Salafis also said they would stay off the streets to avoid clashes.

The anniversary of the revolution comes as Egypt faces a new phase in its upheaval: Ruling Islamists trying to push through their agenda, an opposition trying to break their lock on power, and an economy in free-fall that threatens to fuel public discontent.

At the heart of the country's political divide is a disputed constitution drafted by Morsi's allies without the participation of liberals or minority Christians, what the opposition sees as a bid by Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood to take control of all state institutions and the president's meddling in the judiciary.

"I am asking everyone to go out and demonstrate to show that the revolution must be completed and that the revolution must continue," opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said in a televised message posted on his party's website. "There must be a constitution for all Egyptians. A constitution that every one of us sees himself in it," said the Nobel peace Laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, IAEA.

New militia-like groups opposed to the Islamists have declared in video messages posted on social networks this week their intention to defend the opposition protesters if attacked. At least 10 people were killed and hundreds injured when Morsi's supporters descended upon protesters camped outside his palace in December, starting clashes that lasted for hours with firebombs, swords, knifes and firearms.

Microsoft reports Q2 2013 earnings: posts record revenue of $21.5 billion, $6.38 billion profit

Microsoft reports Q2 2013 earnings posts record revenue of $215 billion, $638 billion profit

This isn't the end of earnings season, but this is the final member of the unholy trinity. Microsoft is reporting that during the second quarter of its 2013 financial year it set a revenue record by raking in $21.5 billion. Of that $6.38 billion was pure profit, lining shareholder's pockets to the tune of $0.76 per share. While EPS was down year-over-year, net income was up dramatically from $5.87 billion a year ago and $5.31 billion last quarter. The Windows division accounted for roughly $5.9 billion of Redmond's revenues, up 24 percent from a year ago, largely thanks to the release of Windows 8. Interestingly, while Windows was surging, its business division was suffering a not inconsequential drop off -- seeing revenues fall 10 percent to $5.7 billion year-over-year. But the Server & Tools department also helped offset some of those declines, with revenue jumping up 9 percent to $5.19 billion.

In a sign that it might be time for a bit of a console refresh, the Entertainment and Devices division saw revenues continue to sink, despite the strong holiday sales. While the $3.77 billion in revenue was a stark increase over Q1's paltry $1.95 billion, it's still a 7 percent fall from the same time period last year. That division is also home to the Surface, which still hasn't seemed to gain much traction with consumers. Thankfully, its Online Services continued to grow, reaching $869 million in revenue -- an 11 percent growth year-over-year, and a sign that it's various web services aren't sinking ships. Most notably ad revenue was up 15 percent thanks largely to an increase in revenue-per-search.

Revenue growth over Q2 2012 wasn't huge, but it was certainly notable and net income didn't drop dramatically. And, perhaps most importantly for investors, results were pretty much inline with Wall Street expectations. It's also worth noting that some revenue has been deferred, $1.3 billion to be exact, thanks to various upgrade offers and video game deals -- though, the company did report previously deferred revenues due to pre-sales of Windows 8. There's PR after the break but, if you want to dig through all the detailed tables of financial data you'll have to hit up the source link. And check back in for updates when the earnings call gets under way at 5:30PM ET.

Public wants deficit reduction but not programs cuts: polling data

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Most Americans want President Barack Obama and Congress to reduce the federal deficit without cutting Medicare, Social Security and education, according to polling data released Thursday.

A joint survey by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Harvard School of Public Health and the Kaiser Family Foundation also showed majorities support President Barack Obama's plan to expand Medicaid and provide subsidized private health insurance to working families through new online state exchanges.

The survey found that two-thirds of Americans want Washington to reduce the deficit in the short term rather than wait for a stronger economy. That included 74 percent of Republicans, 71 percent of independents and 57 percent of Democrats.

At the same time, about two-thirds of the 1,347 adults polled January 3-9 rejected cuts to public education, Medicare and Social Security as a means of deficit reduction. Three-quarters said deficit reduction can occur without cuts to Medicare specifically. The findings have a 3 percentage point margin of error.

The data could suggest public support for Obama as he heads into another round of intensive deficit negotiations with Republicans while vowing to preserve the current structures of Medicare and the national Medicaid program for the poor. The two programs together are expected to cost more than $1 trillion in 2013 and serve just under 100 million people who are elderly, disabled or poor.

But experts said the results suggest political risk for Republicans and Democrats alike as deficit talks go forward.

"Both parties want a grand bargain. But I can't find a detail on either side. They want the other side to say what Medicare would look like before they come to the table. That is nervousness about public opinion," said Robert Blendon, a Harvard professor who studies political trends in healthcare.

Most respondents said deficit reduction can happen without cuts to Medicare and opposed a possible increase in the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67 that Democrats and Republicans have considered as a deficit-cutting option.

Majorities also opposed reducing payments to hospitals and other Medicare healthcare providers or raising payroll taxes on workers and employers to help fund the program for the elderly and disabled.

Instead, 68 percent of Americans favored a proposal to save money by reducing prescription drug prices for low-income people who receive Medicare benefits.

Separately, a new poll by Pew Research Center for the People & the Press also found that 72 percent of Americans believe reducing the federal budget deficit should be a top priority. More than two-thirds of the 1,500 adults polled by Pew from January 9 to 13 favored making Medicare and Social Security financially sound.

The survey by Robert Wood Johnson, Harvard and Kaiser also found that majorities of Americans favor two controversial provisions of Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that would extend health coverage to more than 30 million people who currently have no health insurance.

The first provision, which would create state healthcare exchanges, was favored by 55 percent of respondents who said it should be a top priority for their state governors and legislators. Another 31 percent called the exchanges an important but lower priority. Support included clear majorities of Republicans and Democrats.

Additionally, 52 percent of respondents supported the second provision, which would expand the Medicaid program for the poor to nearly all Americans earning up to 133 percent of the poverty line, equaling about $24,000 a year for a family of three. But opinions split sharply along party lines.

Kaiser President and Chief Executive Drew Altman said the results depict a contrast between political ideology and tangible benefits in the mind of the public.

"The overall idea of the (law) creates a very mixed public reaction, certainly if you call it 'Obamacare.' But most of the benefits of the (law) are very popular, even on a bipartisan basis," he said.
